Mitt Romney Was A Conservative Republican Governor In The Bluest Of The Blue States:

The Economist, On Governor Romney: "Being The Republican Governor Of Such A Liberal State As Massachusetts Must Be Like Swimming Through Sugary Sludge." "Being the Republican governor of such a liberal state as Massachusetts must be like swimming through sugary sludge. Everywhere he looks, he is surrounded by sweet-talking liberal legislators, judges and citizens." (Editorial, "Mitt Romney And Gay Marriage," The Economist, 6/30/05)

There Are Almost 3 Times As Many Registered Democrats As Republicans In Massachusetts:

- Registered Democrats: 1,526,711

The Massachusetts Legislature Is Comprised Of Over 85% Democrats. (Maria Cramer and John C. Drake, "Republican Lawmakers Hit Historic Low Mark," The Boston Globe, 11/8/06)

Gov. Romney Turned The Legislature's $250 Million Retroactive Capital Gains Tax Increase Into A $250 Million Tax Refund. ("Romney Signs Bill Abolishing Retroactive Tax," Boston Business Journal, 12/8/05)

Gov. Romney Closed An Inherited $3 Billion Shortfall Without Tax Increases. (Pam Belluck, "Romney Candidacy Puts Massachusetts Economy In Spotlight," The New York Times, 3/16/07)

Gov. Romney Has Championed Traditional Marriage, And Fought Efforts To Redefine The Institution. (John DiStaso, "Romney: 1 Man 1 Woman," The [Manchester NH] Union Leader, 4/4/07)

Gov. Romney Enforced A 1913 Law Preventing Out-Of-State Same-Sex Couples From Marrying In Massachusetts. (Pam Belluck, "Romney Won't Let Gay Outsiders Wed In Massachusetts," The New York Times, 4/25/04)

Gov. Romney Funded Abstinence Education For The First Time In Massachusetts' Classrooms. (Andrea Estes And Tracy Jan, "State Widens Teaching Of Abstinence," The Boston Globe, 4/21/06)

Gov. Romney Vetoed A Bill To Expand Stem Cell Research That Included Embryo-Destructive Methods. ("Massachusetts' Gov. Romney Delivers On Promise To Veto Stem Cell Bill," The Associated Press, 5/27/05)

Gov. Romney Vetoed Legislation That Would Have Provided For The "Morning After Pill" Without A Prescription. (Governor Mitt Romney, Op-Ed, "Why I Vetoed The Contraception Bill," The Boston Globe, 7/26/05)

Gov. Romney Filed And Promoted A Bill Protecting Religious Liberties. (Brooke Donald, "Romney Files 'Religious Freedom' Bill On Church And Gay Adoption," The Associated Press, 3/15/06)

Gov. Romney Took Action To Enforce Immigration Laws. (Michael Levenson and Jonathan Saltzman, "Troopers Can Arrest Illegal Immigrants In Romney Deal," The Boston Globe, 12/3/06)

Massachusetts Liberals Are Trying To Roll Back Gov. Romney's Conservative Record:

Among The Romney Accomplishments Now Under Attack By Democrats In 2007:

- Gov. Romney's Fiscally-Responsible Budget Cuts Amounting To $383 Million Were Restored. (Casey Ross, "Deval Flips Mitt's Cuts," The Boston Herald, 1/6/07)

- Gov. Romney's Blocking Of Out-Of-State Gay Marriages Was Reversed. (Andrea Estes and Lisa Wangsness, "26 Gay Marriages Set To Be Recorded," The Boston Globe, 4/2/07)

MA is weird in that the registered Democrats aren’t all liberals....lotta conservative Catholic Democrats.....and there’s a large chunk of “unenrolled” voters like myself.

...even 37% of MA voted for Bush the 2nd time around.

Ronald Reagan took Massachusetts twice. Plus the fact that MA had had a Republican Governor for many, many years prior to Deval Patrick. It is a weird place, my home state.

Nothing but a laundry list of talking points [spin] for the liberal former Governor of Massachusetts, falsely presented as somehow being news. Tacky.

EV, you are shocked, shocked that a candidate should tout his record to the same extent that you bash it?

If this is spin, what do we call the bilge you spam posts with?

"Kind of makes one wonder what kind of guy a bunch of liberals would vote for. Seems he either fooled all of time or is trying to fool a bunch of us..."

Massachusetts voters in 2002 were looking for a brilliant financial manager and fiscal conservative to clean up the huge budget deficit mess and improve the faltering economy in the state. They weren't counting on the social conservative ideology that Romney holds as his core values. Ann Coulter said, "And you have to say about Romney, he tricked liberals into voting for him. I like a guy -- I like a guy who hoodwinks liberals so easily."

All the conservative policies and actions from Gov. Romney now under attack or reversed in Massachusetts show what a force he was in that state to hold back the tide of liberalism. The incoming Democrat Gov. Deval Patrick has opened the flood gates.

A “bunch of liberals” voted for Reagan too.

I believe that’s because when a conservative who can articulate very well his positions, such as Reagan did and Romney does, many registered Democrats find they’re not so liberal after all.

Romney is clearly the most conservative of the media’s chosen three “front-runners”, which to quote another solid conservative is sort of like being the “tallest midget in the room”.

Give me a break EV. You post that “Mitt Romney Deception” set of anti-Romney talking points on every single Romney thread and then you call posting one set of pro-Romney talking points “tacky”?

It takes a lot of chutzpah, I'll admit, for Mitt Romney, the guy who used his executive power to implement gay marriage, [threatening the justices of the peace with firing if they wouldn't perform them,] to brag about his "accomplishments" in this area.

Sure. You bet. That's why the Romney administration declared two homosexual men to be the adoptive "parents of the year" for 2006.

Hmmm...I wonder why other states are having to deal with homosexuals who were "married" in Mitt's Massachusetts, then.

Cassandra Ormiston and Margaret Chambers were married in 2004 after same-sex marriage became legal in that Massachusetts. Last year, the couple filed for divorce in Rhode Island, where they live, citing irreconcilable differences.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The state Supreme Court has agreed to hear arguments on whether a gay couple who wed in Massachusetts can get divorced in Rhode Island, where the law is silent on the legality of same-sex marriages.

The justices said they would decide only whether a lower court can recognize a same-sex marriage performed in another state for the purpose of handling a divorce petition. Lawyers for both sides say the divorce case won't decide whether gay couples can get married in Rhode Island.
