Anti-War Groups Accused of Politicizing Memorial Day By Nathan Burchfiel CNSNews.com Staff Writer May 27, 2007
(CNSNews.com) - Anti-war groups and at least one Democratic presidential candidate are planning to hold protests and demonstrations on Memorial Day, a decision that prompted veterans' groups to accuse them of politicizing a day meant to honor fallen American troops.
Former Sen. John Edwards (D-N.C.) came under fire earlier for encouraging his supporters to use Memorial Day celebrations as an outlet for an anti-war message. Through a campaign website and videos posted online, Edwards encouraged supporters to "speak out, to gather together, reclaim patriotism."
"Make it clear that we support the troops, we want to honor their sacrifice, that we are incredibly thankful as a nation for what they've done for us and their service in Iraq," Edwards said.
"And the best way to honor their service and the best way to support them is for the president of the United States to do what America has demanded to be done, and that's to end this war," he added.
Several anti-war groups have answered Edwards' call and will hold Memorial Day events to protest the war.
In Austin, Texas, CODEPINK will hold a protest "to mourn the death in Iraq," including the Iraqi civilians who have been killed in the fighting between American troops and insurgent forces.
In Los Angeles, CODEPINK will kick off a week of anti-war action "in honor of Memorial Day." Events include the reading of the names of U.S. soldiers and Iraqi civilians who have died in Iraq. The group will also hold a march that "honors Iraqis who have lost their lives in this devastating war and occupation."
In Washington, D.C., CODEPINK begins a week of "activist summer training" on Memorial Day.

“Don’t question the Commies’ patriotism” (and YES these are Communist organized protests).
Beware of candidates who proclaim “peaceful retreat” in a time of war.
They should be pushed on the question as to if they feel qualified to lead this nation in a time of war. While no president may WANT to wage war, that responsibility to make that decision ultimately resides with the Commander in Chief.
The lack of preparedness to execute the duties of the office should weigh heavy on the hearts and minds of all 2008 election voters.
Leftist assaults continue on our unique traditions.
If it is “good”, the left is against it. Our servicemen, Christianity, the family, representive government, local parental control over schools, free speech, self defense, the list goes on, and all are targets to be destroyed.
Leftists don’t have any respect for our country, why would be expect them to respect our war dead from any war?
But our hero, John Edwards, doesn’t plan to picket Arlington National Cemetery in front of God and all the people? Why ever not?
Even worse, some political hack on Fox this morning said the President’s speech had politicized the war farm more than Edwards had. Amazing, how their minds (if you can call them that) work.
Someday I’m going to show up at one of those protests and show them the meaning of the word.
I went to Cagle’s political cartoon page and looked at the political cartoons for Memorial Day. Although I took a shower shortly thereafter, I still don’t feel clean. Those people are disgusting. To use fallen American veterans that way just to push their Communist agenda really makes me sick.
Did anyone see how Iraq Veterans Against the War celebrated Memorial Day in NYC yesterday? By pretending to be on patrol and “terrorizing” protesters pretending to be “innocent Iraqis”.
There is very little difference between these protetors and Congressional Democrats - all of whom are traitors. Democrats want to lose the war on terror, while Americans want to win it.
