Car company must pay up for scarf ban

AP - A United States federal jury in Phoenix has ruled a car rental company must pay a Muslim woman $US288,000 ($A348,500) after firing her for wearing a head scarf during the holy month of Ramadan.

Bilan Nur was fired by Alamo Rent A Car just four months after the September 11, 2001 terror attacks. She had worked at the company's Phoenix offices since 1999.

Then 22, Nur complained to the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, which sued the company for what it called a "post 9-11 backlash". The suit says she was fired in violation of the Civil Rights Act for exercising her religious beliefs.

A federal judge agreed last year, ruling that Alamo was guilty of illegal discrimination and did not try to accommodate her.

A jury started hearing the damages part of the case on Tuesday and reached a verdict Friday.

A spokesman for Alamo declined to comment.

What country did they outsource the jury duty to?

I hope they appeal.

Bilan Nur, now 27 years of age still looks like a bag-o-snakes writhing around inside a flour sack.

Sounds like the US law is pretty cut and dried on this matter. However, the award might be reduced on appeal.

I suppose the federal judge trots about his merry way. He mistakes his tenuous impunity for self-virtue.

Can’t fool mother nature. Not for much longer anyway.

Moral is the story, DON’T hire one of them in the first place, the scarf disqualifies them. AS a client, I’ll go to the clerk and auto rental agency that does not have IN YOUR FACE DEFY ME OR I’LL BLOW YOU UP attitude. Can you imagine them wearing their head scarf as a stewardess. Greyound BUS...here I come.

If by some chance he didn’t, he’d be slapped down quicker than you can say “Supreme Court Precedents.” Can’t envy his position.

I'll have to remember to try and use Alamo on future trips.

It ought to be worth $300K to get rid of this bitch. I'm guessing they will easily make that up in increased goodwill.

This is what happens when you hire muslims. Every resume I receive with an Islamic/Arabic sounding name goes right into the shredder.

If you do it during Ramadan you might meet more ladies in head scarves.

Maybe the best thing Alamo could do in this legal climate, if customers are spooked, is create some kind of non customer meeting desk job, paying the same thing, to which such people could be temporarily switched.

Until Jihadists start booby trapping rental cars, I wouldn’t personally worry if I did meet a lady at a car rental desk in a head scarf.

This must be overturned on appeal.
Companies may no longer have dress codes?
Dress codes have nothing to do with religion.

It won’t be. It might not even be if the Supreme Court had nine Scalias.

It’s a small, family-owned business. By law, I am legally entitled to discriminate...which I do.

And I wouldn't "worry" either; but I would state a preference about being waited on by someone else. If that's a problem, there are lots of rental companies around...
