WASHINGTON (AFP) - Violent crime in the United States rose for a second year in a row in 2006, increasing 1.3 percent.
The number of robberies increased six percent and murders increased slightly, law enforcement officials told the Washington Post, referring to an annual report by the Federal Bureau of Investigation ( FBI) to be released Monday.
It was the first sustained increase in violent crime in the country since the early 1990's.
Criminologists told the daily that gangs and the release of large numbers of prisoners were in part responsible for the rising crime.

If violent prisoners are being given early release, we should seriously consider the Joe Arpaio solution of tent cities to reduce “brick” prison overcrowding.
The division is logical. The most incorrigible, medically ill, those that need to appear in court or have family problems stay in the brick prisons near urban areas. Those without a need to be in the rear and who are better behaved get to go to the tent cities in rural areas.
That’s correct, tent cities are a reward, not a punishment.
International law states that military field conditions are not cruel or unusual. They are also much less expensive than brick prisons, both to build and to operate.
I don’t think it’s unreasonable to guess that a major factor is 20 million illegal aliens, including some very violent hispanic drug gangs.
The new amnesty bill wants to give the gangs a free pass, just write a note disclaiming your member ship,
Anderson Cooper, at one point, interviewed current Mayor Daley and asked about the vioelnce in Chicago and what can be done. Daley mentioned stronger gun control is needed. Cooper then said "But Mayor, some of the murders have been by strangling and with knives."
The Mayor seemed a bit shocked. He didn't stumble but he did appear bewildered. He gave a litany of things that should be done like community leaders helping the police and parents taking responsibility but then he went right back to gun control.
What? Criminals aren’t obeying the law? I guess the RATS will just have to make more strongly worded ones, then those pesky criminals will obey them...

This is a meaningless statistic and a meaningless statment. Did the absolute number go up, or the rate? The absolute number would be expected to rise with the rising population.
Mayor Daley can’t even control the Chicago cops, much less the criminals.
They’ve been warning us for years. And we’ve ignored them at our own demise. I thought it was the Lutherans we had to fear. And those hideous Green Bean Casseroles. YE ARE DOOMED.
I think the criminologists got it right, finally.
