SYRACUSE, N.Y. Federal investigators are looking into whether baggage handlers at the Syracuse airport caused a 12-inch hole in the fuselage of a Northwest Airlines passenger jet forced to make an emergency landing in Buffalo, N.Y., last month.
The Detroit-bound Northwest Airlines Flight 1411 was just 20 minutes into its May 18 journey when the crew heard a loud pop. The Douglas DC-9 experienced a loss of cabin pressure and smoke filled the cockpit.
The plane landed safely at the Buffalo airport.
A preliminary report by the National Transportation Safety Board does not assess blame or pinpoint the cause of the gash later found in the side of the plane.
But the report says the hole was near the cargo door and was consistent with the skin being damaged by a foreign object, possibly the top of the cab of a baggage cart tug used by ground crews.

Just sayin'....
Well it can’t be the Amish...
Unless it was a horse drawn baggage tug.
Well, you know, it COULD turn out to be an accident. But, I think I’ll follow this story for a while......
Well, perhaps you remember that American Tourister add that depicted large gorillas hurling luggage against the wall?
bump
Forgot about that......
;-)
Killjoy
Good luck. It is likely to disappear, never to be seen again.
Boy, the "ramp rats" must really have lost confidence in their managment leaders...
Smoke? Just because a hole opened up? Was this really smoke or a condensation mist caused by the sudden decompression. Inquiring minds want to know if there was really a fire caused by this occurrence and, if so, how.
Didn’t you know? Anytime anything goes wrong the cockpit fills with smoke. It’s obligatory for the MSM to point that out for you.
I'd go with the latter.

“The episode is virtually identical to an incident two years ago in Seattle when an Air Alaska jet was forced to return for an emergency landing after a decompression episode caused by a 12-inch gash in the fuselage. A ground crew member had struck the plane with his loading cart but failed to report it because he said the damage did not seem severe.
In that case, a ground crew member was suspended, while others had to undergo safety training.”
On space ships every time the nuclear self destruct sequence starts the lights go off except for the red revolving ones, the air fills with smoke, and steam starts leaking out everywhere. What caught on fire, the light wiring? Where did the steam come from, the reactor? Why do the reactor coolant lines run all over the ship, and why do they break just because the self destruct klaxon starts honking? Why doesn't anyone get burned by the steam as they creep through it looking for the alien?
Oh come now.....You’re not trying to imply that Hollywood motion pictures truly depict events happening logically and practically, are you? [ silly ranting off]
