Gay Groups Decry Surgeon General Nominee
AP via SFGate ^ | 6/6/7 | JEFFREY McMURRAY, Associated Press Writer

Lexington (AP) -- President Bush's nominee for surgeon general, Kentucky cardiologist Dr. James Holsinger, has come under fire from gay rights groups for voting to expel a lesbian pastor from the United Methodist Church and writing in 1991 that gay sex is unnatural and unhealthy.

Also, Holsinger helped found a Methodist congregation that, according to gay rights activists, believes homosexuality is a matter of choice and can be "cured."

"He has a pretty clear bias against gays and lesbians," said Christina Gilgor, director of the Kentucky Fairness Alliance, a gay rights group. "This ideology flies in the face of current scientific medical studies. That makes me uneasy that he rejects science and promotes ideology."

Holsinger, 68, has declined all interview requests.

Blair Jones, a White House spokesman, said in a telephone interview Wednesday night that Holsinger had spent his career in public service and taking care of others.

"On numerous occasions, Dr. Holsinger has taken up the banner for underrepresented populations, and he will continue to be a strong advocate for these groups and all Americans," Jones said.

Holsinger served as Kentucky's health secretary and chancellor of the University of Kentucky's medical center. He taught at several medical schools and spent more than three decades in the Army Reserve, retiring in 1993 as a major general.

His supporters, including fellow doctors, faculty members and state officials, said he would never let his theological views affect his medical ones.

"Jim is able, as most of us are in medicine, to separate feelings that we have from our responsibility in taking care of patients," said Douglas Scutchfield, a professor of public health at the University of Kentucky.

In announcing Holsinger as his choice for America's top doctor May 24, Bush said the physician will focus on educating the public about childhood obesity.

I thought a person’s religious beliefs and church activity was a personal choice and was not to be factored into his or her fitness for office. The groups who are opposed to him are guilty of the very intolerance they accuse him of.

I agree. One does not need to be religious to realize that homosexuality is an aberration. We need to put an end to the false premise that one either is for or against homosexuality in total. While I believe that every peaceable person should be protected from violence, no one has a right to be protected from criticism or exclusion when participating in a disgusting behavior. We have allowed a small fringe group to define the public discourse on this issue. It is long over due to politely invite them to leave our children and our society alone. We don’t need to change the way we live our lives and perceive the world in order to make them feel more accepted for their choice of dysfunctional behavior.

Homosexual males with AIDS have an average life span of 39 years.
Homosexual males WITHOUT Aids have an average life span of 41 years.

Cigarette smoking white male has an average life span of 70+ years.

These are facts.

Now, which life style is more dangerous, the homosexual or the heterosexual, cigarette smoking, God fearing male?

The fact that we cover up and hide this kind of information makes my blood boil. And, yes, homosexual behavior, as demented as it is, is wholey treatable and controllable as is any other deviant form of behavior.

If they can prove that its healthy and natural, hell, I'd join 'em. Fortunately will never happen

The White House is in no mood to fight. If the details in the article are basically accurate, it will drop the guy.

Dr. Holsinger “has declined all interview requests.”
Well, unless he does some “interviews” pretty damned quick, he’ll have proven one of two things: Either he wasn’t qualified for the job, part of which is politics, part of which is talking to the media; or we’ll learn yet again that the White House stupidly muzzles its appointees because it’s scared of its own shadow.

What scientific medical studies is he talking about? So far no scientific research has shown homosexuality to be genetic or to be anything other than environmentally produced. Yet the homosexual propaganda machine pretends otherwise.

Let's see, they don't like him because he voted to expel a pastor openly rejecting his church's teachings and for daring to call homosexual acts what they are: unnatural and unhealthy. Looks like the homosexuals have discovered that sometimes the truth hurts.

Where are you getting this information from? I’ve heard this before but have not been able to locate the source.

I completely agree.

AIDS is completely preventable - stop having risky, perverted sex.

Cigarette smokers live long lives, especially if one eats healthy and exercises regularly.

You are exactly correct. The MSM will spout all they say to support
the agenda of undermining The United States of America.

Makes me sick.
