Celebrity Justice Cuts Both Ways for Paris Hilton
The New York Times ^ | June 9, 2007 | Sharon Waxman

Posted on 06/09/2007 3:14:52 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

The national obsession with celebrity collided head-on with the more serious issue of the equal application of justice on Friday, as a judge sent the socialite Paris Hilton back to jail some 36 hours after she was released for an unspecified medical problem.

Judge Michael T. Sauer ordered Ms. Hilton to serve the rest of her sentence in a county lockup after the city attorney, whose office had prosecuted her, filed a petition asking that the sheriff’s department be held in contempt or explain why it had released her with an ankle monitor on Thursday, after she had served just five days.

Ms. Hilton had been sentenced to 45 days in jail for violating the terms of her probation in an alcohol-related reckless driving case. With time off for good behavior, she had been expected to serve 23 days.

Ms. Hilton, 26, wearing no makeup and with her hair disheveled, sobbed and screamed, “Mom, this isn’t right,” as she was taken from the packed courtroom by deputies.

It was a rare moment in this star-filled city, where badly behaving celebrities can seemingly get away with anything — or at least D.U.I. But Ms. Hilton, for all her money and celebrity, seems to have been caught between battling arms of the justice system here, with prosecutors and Judge Sauer determined to make a point by incarcerating her, only to have the sheriff’s office let her go.

“She’s a pawn in a turf fight right now,” said Laurie Levenson, a law professor at Loyola Law School Los Angeles. “It backfired against her because she’s a celebrity. She got a harsher sentence because she was a celebrity. And then when her lawyer found a way out of jail, there was too much public attention for it to sit well with the court.”

Boo-hoo! I say put her in with the general population, not some "VIP" wing of the jail. BTW, why is this the lead story when we have wars in Afghanistan, Iraq and potentially Iran?

At this point I would love to see her spend 45 days in jail because that could be at least 30 days of news without Paris in it.....

Sounds like Paris is having to face the unfriendly, ugly real world for the first time, and all her money is useless to prevent it.

But then, jail is SUPPOSED to be uncomfortable, right? So you don’t want to go back, you get your act together.

Let her learn it.

That's the part that was so upsetting to her, no? No time to get her face on and her hair combed? Who cares what you look like in jail? And when will this 26-year old grow up?

Read the whole article, first, then ask me that question (hint: they talk about John Edwards, “Scooter” Libby, and more..).

I read the whole article.

If you think the NYT should not have published this, why are you posting it here?

That’s not what I said. I said “why is this the lead story” etc, etc... The NY Times has the right under the first amendment to publish just about anything, but should news of a no-talent so-called “celebrity” socialite be given more space than positive news from Iraq, the amnesty situation, or any other hard news? News about how the media treats different situations is news unto itself, and that’s why I posted it. Does that meet with your approval?

Well, the Times is wrong on one thing: both Bork and Dershowitz wish to challenge the Libby decision.

Other than that, however, it’s a fairly accurate description of an insane situation. Who even cares about this dumb slutty little rich girl? Obviously, the Dumb Slutty Little Rich Girl Fan Club. I don’t know who they are — probably Princess Di worshippers — but they clearly think that being a celeb gives you special rights to violate any and all laws, agreements, etc.

This woman has total contempt for the system and thinks it shouldn’t affect her because she’s special, an opinion that she has revealed that on numerous occasions, and I think the judge was trying to call her to her senses by giving her a reasonable sentence. Heck, he even reduced it.

That said, I would never have known a thing about this bimbo, although I had seen her name before and knew she was somebody in the People Magazine news sphere, until this most recent event. I don’t even watch TV news, but Paris the Ditz has been all over every print and radio news source and the public is virtually forced to listen to every nasty detail about her.

Sounds like Paris is having to face the unfriendly, ugly real world for the first time…

And yet some people (including some here and even Ann Coulter last night on Fox) say she was treated too harshly. I say Big Boo Hoo.

Remember that she pleaded out the DUI to reckless driving so she got off rather easy the first time IMHO. Then she got caught, not once, but twice driving on a suspended license, showed up late for not one, but two court appearances and tried to pass the buck by saying it was her “publicist’s” fault for giving her bad advice and “I have “people who handle these things for me”. I think the judge is not making an example of her because she’s rich or famous, but because she flaunted that the rules didn’t apply to her because she is rich and “famous”.

But then, jail is SUPPOSED to be uncomfortable, right? So you don’t want to go back, you get your act together.

Right on. But now the poor baby has “medical and emotional issues” like we didn’t already know that. Hey if I got arrested and thrown in jail, I’d have some “emotional issues” too. Again, Big Boo Hoo. Welcome to the “Real” Real World, Paris. Justice should also apply to Lindsey “Lowbrow”, Nicole (please give this girl a cheeseburger) Ritchie and Mel (anger issues) Gibson for similar offenses.

I don’t feel sorry for her, not because she made a mistake, but because she made many more on top of it and doesn’t seem to grasp that she is accountable for her own actions.

I feel a lot sorrier for the poor working slob who stops after work for a beer or two, gets pulled over for something minor and is just barely over the legal limit. He (or she) goes to jail, loses his license, has to attend alcohol education classes, has to pay for a lawyer but since he’s just a working slob, can’t afford a very good one, can’t afford to go to a posh Malibu Rehab/Spa Vacation to impress the court and has to walk or take the bus to work for a year or more because he doesn't have limo drivers and "people" to take care of him and maybe he even loses his job as a result and his wife and children suffer. But if you break the law, that’s what happens. A DUI is serious because drunk driving kills and it demonstrates a lack of good judgment and self control. A lot of people learn from their first mistake but because too many don’t and end up with multiple DUI’s and cause injury and death, the law is much less lenient than it used to be.

And just when is this skank’s “15 minutes of fame” going to be over? It should have been over 5 minutes after it started and she should have been arrested for assault when she released her so called “music” CD.

I'm not here to discuss her, and I don't think Ann Coulter was discussing Paris per se. She was looking objectively at the facts: No one should be removed from jail by order of one law enforcement official, and then returned by another official because he's mad at the first official. The sequence of events is laughable if not shameful.

I am surprised mosre posters here don't look at the bigger picture. Judge Sauer krauted all over the penal system in one bang of his gavel.

Go ahead, make the snide little comments instead of adressing the larger question: Do you want anyone to be legally set free and then re-arrested because those in charge haven't got their act together?

It’s Paris I’m a porn queen as a hobby Hilton. She hasn’t taken anything about life as seriously as you are taking about her minor lifestyle inconvenience. Hoss, most of think the rich little slut is getting some much needed maturity education and I’m sure she doesn’t give a rat’s patoot about your concern

I must admit this was a frighting episode—I actually agreed with the Rev Tawana Sharpton on something....

BINGO !!

Ann is right... YOU are right...

There is FAR MORE going on here than anything that has to do with Paris Hilton... I for one am APPALLED by how many so-called conservatives are seemingly invested to such a degree of hatred or contempt for Hilton that they are so willing to overlook the egregious usurpation of executive authority by this judicial tyrant!

Undoubtedly the majority of those morons (especially the press) chasing Paris around the last few days are the same ones who are screaming “global warming” at the top of thier lungs. I’d imagine that thier collective “carbon footprint” was massive.

How many hours of helicopters hovering? How many squad cars for one person? The car itself, three or four escorts, and how many for crowd control? Massive crowds who they themselves wasted gas most likely to never even get a glimpse of Hilton herself, just to be part of the a circus.

Seems to me that a great place to start to reducing our oil usage would be to stop BS like this.

The problem with sticking her in GP is that she is a target, guilty yes, but the Sheriff has a duty to protect her while in his custody. It would be pretty bad for anyone to be the victim of a major crime (rape, murder, assault, etc.) while in the jail. That is a direct reflection on those in charge of the jail, that is the Sheriff. So as bad as it is, she can’t be in GP, you should not allow her to be killed for driving without a license.

It’s leads because the media can’t run all war all the time without giving up all the good news happening in Iraq. MSM loves this crud.

Oh, but if I’m locked up in jail(which, of course, I never have been), I am housed with murderers, pedophiles, wife-beaters, gang-bangers, and assorted other criminals? Why is Miss Hilton special? Because her parents own a hotel chain? So now we live in Central America?
