A week before Father's Day, cartoonist Berkeley Breathed did a very cartoonist thing and caused a controversy to be stirred over a comic strip that seemed to slight fathers while celebrating lesbian moms.
More or less. Reaction has been swift and predictable: outrage on the right; smug contempt for the right on the left. In the middle is one happy cartoonist, who got a rise from a jaded nation. Though the message of the strip may be interpreted more than one way -- either as advancing an idea or exposing a cultural phenomenon -- outrage is not necessarily misplaced.
For those who missed it, the strip -- "Opus" -- shows two boys talking about third-grader Davie Dinkle having two moms. "Multiple mommies,'' says one boy. "Cool,'' says the other. "No dad?'' asks Opus Penguin, the existential penguin and namesake of the strip...

is that you in the last frame of the comic?
Nope. The only way to interpret that is anti male.

______
Nope. There is definitely more than one way to interpret that cartoon.
Yup. Not really much interpreting needed. In standard secular humanist tradition Berke ignored the preponderance of evidence that children growing up in a home with a father do better (education, crime, suicide etc) than those without.
yeah, Rosie has no anger issues....ahem.
Go ahead and describe two, then. :)
Guys who are like the guy in the strip, tend to live alone, and not have families in the first place.
That wasn’t a father in that cartoon, it was a sire.
I’ve stopped paying attention to Berke Breathed. He’s just another nutcase who should be in an assylum, as far as I’m concerned.
The article is weak. Like she phoned it in from a day at the spa.
Go ahead and describe two, then. :)
__________
1. Take it at face value
2. Take it as a play on stereotypes
chill... I thought it was funny.
Could have done the same joke with no lesbian ‘two mommies’ info.
ok dont get all technical... yes I know he would have still had to ‘set up’ the fact there was no father...
And...how else you gonna learn the proper thing to do when a ref makes a bad call???
Someone should superimpose Rosie’s face on that guy in the comic....
Steve Dallas is turning over in his grave, I’m sure.
What comic is Opus in these days? I think I read Outland for a little while when it first started (after Bloom County ended), but it was rarely any good.
I used to like his work. This is an exceptionally idiotic idea and strip.
“Opus Penguin, the existential penguin and namesake of the strip.”
I guess that answers my question. I missed that the first time through.
Some piece of work that cartoonist is.
