Talk radio means the world to me. I’m not a dittohead (though I adore Rush) or mind-numbed robot. The variety of conservatives, populists, and libertarians I enjoy make each day more interesting. Housework and chauffeuring kids leaves a mind hungry for the knowledge, exchange of ideas, and laughter these hosts provide.
I learned the truth about free speech when I was in college, deep in the newspaper “stacks” in the library’s shelves. Alone back there, I happened upon the two copies of the Klansman, years old, that were kept there for all to see.
I picked one up and looked in and wanted to scream. The hideous caricatures, the hateful words, against me and my Holocaust-surviving parents, and all of my black friends. I absolutely KNEW I had to rip the filthy things into shreds and destroy them once and for all. I was about to do so and I stopped.
Freedom of speech.
I had just learned something about an evil side of my country, a small speck of evil that, knowing it existed, I could fight against forever. It had been important that I SEE what was out there. With extreme difficulty I lowered the vile press back onto its shelf and backed away.
Would that the liberals (and self-serving Republicans) would grow in maturity as I did on that day.
I sometimes think I am in 1933 Germany.... and that is frightening.
I had a jewish grandfather leave before the start of WWI. He was one of the lucky ones.....
Yaelle.
FREEDOM OF SPEECH IS WHAT WE ARE FIGHTING FOR.
I’M GLAD YOU DIDN’T SHRED THOSE PAPERS IN THE STACKS. THE TRUTH IS ON OUR SIDE AND WE NEED ALL THE FREEDOM WE CAN MUSTER TO GET THE TRUTH..
