Wyoming's Barrasso Replaces Sen. Thomas
ABC News ^ | June 22, 2007 | Bob Moen

Posted on 06/22/2007 3:46:27 PM PDT by Clintonfatigued

Republican John Barrasso, a surgeon and conservative Wyoming legislator, was named as the country's newest U.S. senator Friday to replace the late Craig Thomas.

The temporary appointment, announced by Wyoming's governor, is effective immediately, but it won't effect the Senate's party breakdown since Thomas was also a Republican. He died June 4 while being treated for leukemia.

Barrasso, 54, will serve in Thomas' place until the beginning of 2009. He said on his application that he also intends to then run in a November 2008 special election to serve out the remainder of Thomas' term, which ends in 2013.

“Republican John Barrasso, a surgeon and conservative Wyoming legislator...”

CONSERVATIVE MY ASS!! He campaigned as pro-abort in 1996. If he supports amnesty, he deserves to lose the primary.

Any indications of his intentions on the Amnesty bill yet?

I have no idea. Which means that Wyoming conservatives should be prepared to oppose him in the 2008 GOP primary.

If he is not a conservative, then doesn’t the Wyoming state GOP share some of the blame? They should have put up three very conservative candidates for the governor to choose from. In other words, they shouldn’t have given the governor much choice in the matter.

I'm alright with him, He's an Orthopedic Surgeon, which is the profession of my family.

Side note, I dont think its fair to characterize him as Pro-Abort, he's Pro-Life now, and I think (not positive) he was neutral on Abortion at worst in 1996. However, if he's for Amnesty, that could be a problem.

I'd be careful "primarying" him with Dave waiting in the wings, a messy Republican primary is how Dave gets elected.

You need to look at every single Conservative currently in politics. Many of them were pro-choice in the 1990s as that was the true conservative position at the time.
The prevailing wisdom was that the government had no business in personal matters.

You make a good point, but Governor Dave has already stated that he’s not interested in being a Senator.

And that Stalin, Pol Pot, Ho Chi Minh, Castro, Chavez, etc. had good intentions.

I see no reason why we shouldn’t start pounding this new guy now, so he knows right up front what the public thinks of amnesty. I’ve faxed all of Thomas’ offices. I assume the messages will reach the new senator.

Poor copywriting. One has to ask whom "He" is in the second sentence. By process of elimination, you can figure out that the "He" is Thomas but there is no distinct linkage for the pronoun to the previous sentence.
