Iranian forces crossed Iraqi border: report

Iranian Revolutionary Guard forces have been spotted by British troops crossing the border into southern Iraq, The Sun tabloid reported on Tuesday. Britain's defence ministry would not confirm or deny the report, with a spokesman declining to comment on "intelligence matters".

An unidentified intelligence source told the tabloid: "It is an extremely alarming development and raises the stakes considerably. In effect, it means we are in a full on war with Iran -- but nobody has officially declared it."

"We have hard proof that the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps have crossed the border to attack us. It is very hard for us to strike back. All we can do is try to defend ourselves. We are badly on the back foot."

The Sun said that radar sightings of Iranian helicopters crossing into the Iraqi desert were confirmed to it by very senior military sources.

In response to the report, a British defence ministry spokesman said: "There is evidence that explosive devices used against our troops in southern Iraq originated in Iran."

"Any Iranian link to armed militias in Iraq either through weapons supply, training or funding are unacceptable."

Britain has about 7,100 soldiers in Iraq, most of whom are based in the southern city of Basra and surrounding areas, though the government has pledged to reduce that to between 5,000 and 5,500 this year.

We just can’t secure a border anywhere. Why are we so good at some missions, and so utterly incompetent at others?

If America gets involved then Iran will be sorry that it sent troops to Iraq.

Iran better watch it! If they don’t stop we are going to hit them with a very stern letter from the State Department.

If they have been spotted, then why not call in some air support and end their little journey?

Yeah, this is what we need.. a new war. Who are we going to send, the Boy Scouts? Our troops ought to be here defending our own borders.

However, we will send the letter only AFTER we get international support and UN approval.

You bet. A little CAS could do the trick nicely.

Well, see, what ya do when you see their choppers crossing the border is to send some of your own fast movers to make sure they don't cross it going back home.

Because we’re waiting any-day-now for the people to rise up in Revolution (something I’ve been hearing since I been in High School in 1990) , so if we attack them , the people will side with the gov’t.

That’s one Lefty explanation..

another is... we provoked them to begin with and they’re just innocent Islamists protecting themselves.

Frankly I doubt we we’re going to do anything ... otherwise we would have already. I dont know what our incompetent govt is waiting for, but they’re going to be wait too long and then it will be too late.

There have been different versions of this story, but this is the first I’ve seen that has mentioned radar evidence. If this is true, why aren’t these helicopters being intercepted by air or engaged with ground-to-air defenses?

I hope the Brits aren’t continuing their soft approach as they did with their soldiers/marines abducted at sea a while back. Setting bad precedents only invites further aggression.

Believing news printed in the Sun is like believing the news in the National Enquirer.

Well, I’m no expert, but it seems to me like it is one thing to attack and invade Iran, and another to bomb the living daylights out of Iranian solders who have entered Iraq.

Nah...if you want results, you need to send in the Girl Scouts. Nothing is more dangerous than hormonal teens in the throes of PMS.

We send our Air Force!
No ground troops required.
The objective is to destroy targets, not to hold ground.

Okay, someone please explain to me why we are not lighting up these choppers with SAMS or Stingers or something? That's the problem many Americans have with this war...the very valid perception that we're pussyfootin' around and that if we were serious we'd take out these choppers and ask questions later. I mean, really other than allied forces NO ONE should have anything in the sky whatsoever, period.

Because our representatives in Washington are suffering from pork poisoning, power posturing and political assininity! Shoot the damn Iranians who crossed the border and put the fence up here in the states, drop this immigration bill joke and begin listening to WE THE PEOPLE! With an approval rating for Congress at approximately 19% you would think they get the message. I have a list of those who represent me and when the next election comes around some of them will definitely not get my vote.

If El Presidente would only Secure Iraq Borders, Syrinan & Iranian militants wouldn't be killing Americans and Iraqis.
