German aristocrat Bismarck dead at 44
By JILL LAWLESS, Associated Press Writer 42 minutes ago
Count Gottfried von Bismarck, the stylish and troubled scion of one of Germany's most famous families, has died at the age of 44, police said Wednesday.
The Metropolitan Police said Bismarck, great-great-grandson of Prussian Chancellor Otto von Bismarck, who unified Germany, was found dead at his apartment in London's tony Chelsea district on Monday.
A post-mortem examination was due to be held Wednesday. ------------ snip --------------------
As an undergraduate, he was known for his lavish parties and extravagant appearance, which at times involved dressing in fishnet stockings or traditional Bavarian lederhosen.
Bismarck's life was clouded by two deaths at his homes. In 1986, Olivia Channon, the 22-year-old daughter of a Conservative government minister, died of a drug overdose in Bismarck's bed at Oxford. ------------- snip -----------------------------
Dr. Paul Knapman, presiding over an inquest at Westminster Coroner's Court, said one room of the apartment contained a "bizarre" assortment of items including a large rubber tarpaulin on the floor, towels, lubricants, bottles of vodka and buckets of sex toys.
Police concluded Casey's death was an accident, and the coroner's verdict was "death by misadventure," meaning no one was to blame. ------------ snip --------------------

I know, this may be overreaching, but the difference between the two Bismarks seem to reflect the decline of the West.

Interesting cause of death. I always wonder how the war would have been if the Bismarck had not been sunk so early.

I wonder if you can find a vibrating “von Bismark” on the web. Sink the Bismark, just in the privacy of your own rubber lined bedroom.

No, I think it’s very indicative of the generations and how grave his ancestor was and how frivolous he was. There needs to be a balance.

Bismarck eventually settled in London, working in finance and the telecom business. He remained out of the headlines until August, when a 38-year-old man, Anthony Casey, died after falling from a terrace during a party at Bismarck's home.
Thought I remembered the name. What the article sanitizes is that the second death he was previously associated with (described above) was part of a drug-fueled homosexual orgy.

I always wonder how the war would have been if the Bismarck had not been sunk so early. Not sure it would have made much difference? Keeping the Bismarck in port (in Norway, for instance) would have required constant surveillance. Whenever it broke for the open ocean, the results would have been pretty much the same.
It would have tied up a lot of British naval assets checking it, but it would also have tied up a lot of German anti-aircraft assets defending it.
I wonder how the War would have gone had the Germans used their submarines (their most effective weapon) more effectively (and ruthlessly) earlier in the War.
Hitler's meddling in strategic (and tactical) decision making did the Germans an enormous amount of damage.

True. Not taking out the troops at Dunkirk was a huge error.

I remember the feller from the "Bucket Of Dildos" story of last year. Kinda hard to forget. Something about one of his guests ingesting five times the lethal dose of cocaine during a gay S&M orgy and dancing on the rooftop until he fell to his death.
I never get invited to the good parties...
