Who really won the cold war?

Events have brought that question to my mind as well. So often I've found politics to be a game of opposites - the public presentation being opposite the actual intent. Is it only coincidence that the US seems sucked into a far left vacuum left by the fall of the Soviet Union?

I suppose it could be coincidence - a showing of results from decades of leftist underground activities aimed at bringing liberal governments to their knees, including the US - finally paying off. If the Soviet Union could have held on a little longer ....

But now, with the EU rushing to replace the Soviet Union - I can't help but think the world is moving to a very dark and scarey place. Once again, all that patience and good will has built, destined to ruin.
