BOISE, Idaho (AP) - Sweltering residents across the West headed for lakes and rivers on Thursday, seeking relief from triple-digit temperatures expected to set records through at least Friday.(Snip)
Around Las Vegas - where temperatures reached 109 degrees before 1 p.m. Thursday - transformers were overheating and causing electrical pole fires because of all the people switching on their air conditioners, said Scott Allison with the Clark County Fire Department.
In Montana, farmers anxiously watched their crops and thermometers. High temperatures for a handful of days can harm crop yield.
"Prolonged heat is devastating. Four or five days of it is going to be hard," said wheat farmer Lynn Nordwick near Poplar, Mont.

At least 150,000 people were expected to flock to the Lake Mead National Recreation Area in Nevada and Arizona in hopes of cooling off in the water this weekend, said Roxanne Dey, recreation area spokeswoman."For some people, we're the only affordable alternative for a place to cool off," Dey said.
In Phoenix, which hit 115 Thursday, 42-year-old laborer Russ Waldrip wiped sweat from his face as he unloaded large windows from the back of a truck.
"When it gets this hot I pour water over my head all day," Waldrip said. "Sometimes I can't wait to jump in the pool, but I don't even have the energy to do that."

Why no headlines about our unusually cool summer in the upper midwest?
Here in Texas, we’ve had cool temperatures and rain for two weeks. Go figger!
Bush should do the media a favor and take his summer vacation in Arizona this year (heh heh heh).
Isn’t Las Vegas in the desert? Don’t deserts get really, really hot in the summer?
I live in the freakin’ Mojave Desert...yeah, it’s hot in the summer. Jeeez.
You will never see that Headline until the Gorboffs feel the heat of a .45 in their A$$.. :)
Where’s Al Gore? After he bails his kid out of jail and plea bargains away all charges, he better get his buns to Vegas and Phoenix to speak about how hot it is.
After a long article, followed up on the back page, I finally found the nugget of truth about WHICH record was set.....
"electric providers claim a new record for the amount of electricity used"
See my #6 for an answer to your question.
They do. Last time I was there it was about 112...and in my opinion when it gets anywere over 85 people walk in the shade.
Notice that this paper found the only non Mexican day laborer in Las Vegas.
We saw temperatures in the upper 40s a few nights ago and that’s mighty cool for July even in Michigan.
I’m reminded of one of my favorite Bill Engvall routines where he talks about the weather in his native Texas, and how the weathermen would always go over the top with the dire circumstances:
“[so the weatherman says]’And I don’t never remember it bein’ this hot in Texas ever before.’
“I wish the sports guy could just reach over and — POW!
‘LAST August! Here’s a guess: probably NEXT August!’”
Yep... What they call Climate change, we used to call the weather...
Summer will be the hottest it’s been all year long!
Don't worry, they would have if they could have made money screaming about it!!!.. :)
How about record lows in Oklahoma and record rainfall/flooding in OK and TX. Nope-—they won’t make a big deal about it b/c it doesn’t support the global warming hoax.
Oh no! He might sweat out some of his precious fat!
And I ain't cleanin' up the mess that leaves!
Yep... What they call Climate change, we used to call the weather...
You’re close. We had a saying in the Cloud Physics Lab: “Climate is what you expect, but weather is what you get.”
