BGE-Constellation ties queried (MD)

BALTIMORE (AP) — Gov. Martin O'Malley is asking the Public Service Commission to hold expedited hearings on a breakup of Baltimore Gas and Electric Co. and corporate parent Constellation Energy Group.

In a letter to commission Chairman Steven B. Larsen obtained by the Baltimore Sun, Mr. O'Malley said he is concerned that roles some executives play at both companies led BGE to pay more for electricity than it should have. Mr. O'Malley, a Democrat, also said he wants the commission to consider whether the utility's 1.1 million customers should receive rebates.

"We need to know whether the relationship between BGE and Constellation may have contributed to the rate increase faced by Maryland's consumers this summer," he said.

I recall reading something about Constellation Energy and Goldman Sachs in that book by marine Illario Pantano. He was in Baltimore helping setup the relationship between Goldman Sachs and Constellation Energy. I can't remember exactly what he said about the deal, but he didn't feel right about it. Anybody else read this book?

“O’Malley said he is concerned that roles some executives play at both companies”

Funny. He is NOT concerned about the role some of HIS people play for private business and then get hired by his administration. (Eastern shore land deal)

I smell rolling blackouts in BGE territory. Oh well, I don’t care. I live in Allegheny Power territory... maybe O’Malley won’t notice us :)

I do know Constellation Ripped off (did not pay vendors) 5 cities in Western Wayne County -Michigan- for a now demolished incinerator for 10’s of millions of dollars. As a resident of one of those cities, I’m still paying for EPA ‘updates’ thru increased taxes for a dismantled incinerator.

The 5 cities lost megamillions.

And throw in the toxic ash pits which must be monitored/maintained for 50 years.

Did either of you catch the latest news about our rates going up even more depending on how far they have to send the electricity to you? The increase is considerable too.

This is just about O’Malley trying to extort concessions from BGE. The politicians had put in deregulation of electrical suppliers, and put a nine year cap on prices increases. Well no other significant suppliers came in AFAIK (who would? Maryland is probably only 3rd to CA and NY in being anti-business). So there has been a huge price increase to make up for the cap; O’malley promised to do something about it during the campaign, though he knew he couldn’t. So he is trying to intimidate BGE.

And he can’t understand why businesses don’t want to move to Maryland. But whatever the answer, it will not be HIS fault; nothing ever is.

The O’Malley family: First lady and Baltimore District Court Judge Catherine Curran O’Malley has a longer commute to work — but much, much bigger digs. The O’Malleys traded their relatively cozy four-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bath Tudor in northeast Baltimore (they put it on the market last week) for a 54-room Georgian-style mansion in the heart of Annapolis. The family’s two teenage girls and two younger boys now have more room to roam, three cooks at their disposal and a big-screen TV on which to play video games. Perhaps the biggest winner of all: Scout, the family’s terrier, who has a far bigger yard and unsuspecting tourists to bark at all day.

This boy is moving up isnt he?

Martin O’Malley was promising in a TV ad to “stop the rate hikes.”

The state utility commission approved a 50 percent increase in electricity rates this week - on top of the 15 percent increase the General Assembly approved last summer. A 50 percent rise in something that has already been raised 15 percent works out to a total increase of 72.5 percent - more than the “shocking 72 percent” candidate O’Malley warned about in a release headlined, “LEADERSHIP THAT WORKS: Defending Maryland Against Rising Energy Prices

The Democrats made them hold off until after the election to get O’Malley elected, then the rates went up.

This guy is crooked as a snake.

I am glad I changed suppliers over a year ago. I just locked in at .11 per kWh for 2 years. I saw no change in my last bill since I had a contract price of .10 per kWh last year. I am not sure if this new scheme will effect me or not since I am contracted at a fixed price.

“...maybe O’Malley won’t notice us :)”

Not only won’t he notice you, but since your area did not vote for him, he will cut your local funding in the next 4 budgets as he increases Baltimore city, Mont. Co., and PG Co.’s. Just who this man is. Can you say slimy?

I hate to break it to you, but the mansion he moved into is the Governor’s Mansion. Most maryland Governors live there. The only exceptions I know of are Parris Glendenning (who continued to live in PG County) and William Donald Schaefer (who has lived in the same Baltimore rowhouse for over 50 years)

truthfully, it wasn’t like BGE lost money while price was capped. I am a shareholder. My dividends went up in value every year. I saw financial statements

BGE just wasn’t making maximum profit. Honestly, I would rather the price of electric stay lower, even though I benefit from the price increase. But it also hurts: I still have to pay BGE every month and right now I am using more AC than I should because I can’t take this heat!

LOL the jokes on me. I read it and fell for it. I kick my own butt on that one, still. He did promise to stop the BG&E electric cost rise and he certainly failed on that one.

Glad you caught it,I wont use that one again. LOL

he did run his campaign on the BGE thing, that is for sure. I think, that with the recent price hikes, he might even lose in the primary if he is not careful next election cycle

Now they are talking about re-regulating electric rates :)

O'Malley: Split BGE from Parent Thursday, July 12, 2007 WBAL Radio and The Associated Press Governor O'Malley has raised the prospect of splitting off Baltimore Gas and Electric from its parent company, Constellation Energy. But utility industry analysts say consumers probably wouldn't see much relief from such a split. Marylanders would still have to pay market rates for electricity under the state's deregulation laws. Some say Constellation executives would love nothing more than to spin off BGE or sell it. The move would allow Constellation to shed the political baggage that comes with owning a regulated utility. Maryland People's Counsel Paula Carmody says the debate about the relationship between BGE and Constellation is worth having. But she says the more important issue is whether Maryland should re-regulate the electricity industry.
