STOCKHOLM, Sweden - She is a latecomer to the information superhighway, but 75-year-old Sigbritt Lothberg is now cruising the Internet with a dizzying speed. Lothberg's 40 gigabits-per-second fiber-optic connection in Karlstad is believed to be the fastest residential uplink in the world, Karlstad city officials said. ADVERTISEMENT

In less than 2 seconds, Lothberg can download a full-length movie on her home computer — many thousand times faster than most residential connections, said Hafsteinn Jonsson, head of the Karlstad city network unit.

Jonsson and Lothberg's son, Peter, worked together to install the connection.

At 75 years old she doesn’t have that many years left. It’s best that she uses the net as quickly as possible while she still can.

She’s in Sweden. If she wants porn she need only walk down the redlight district and look in the window displays.

40GB/s? Dang, hook her up with a Torrent, and point her over to The Pirate Bay, and she could download a ton of movies.

In the 21st century, one point five Gigawatts is probably nothing.

I don’t even want to think about what kind of porn she would download...

More likely, having never used a computer before, she’s trying to figure out how to move the mouse, click and drag, and what that START thing is down on the bottom.

Less than 2 seconds to download a full-length movie; several hours to figure out what to click on to actually start the download. >:-)

Actually, that’s way faster than any drive can write, so she can’t actually do those things that fast. It’s also way faster than her video card, so she can’t watch all those movies at once either.

As I tell those who get one of those 8 Meg connections from the local cable company —

You might get that speed between your modem and the ISP’s modem, but once you’re past that point, you’re out on the same ole internet.

Right now my 756 kb SDSL line is downloading 2 DVD’s full of software from a well-known vendor, and it’s stuck at 95 kb. That fast link (above) or one from my cable vendor (ick) wouldn’t speed that up one bit.

“This was posted before and the other article also said she could watch a whole bunch of streaming HD movies at once.”

In theory, yes. If the server was at the ISP’s office, yes. If you’re talking about YouTube video, yes. If you’re thinking that you’re gonna get all that bandwidth when your ISP’s uplink is half that, and the entire net is congested... no.

Didn’t know you could write to disk at 20G/second.

I relate to that! (I have 15 grandkids) (and a son that builds me a new computer ever few years - )

Believe me, one does start to appreciate the days more at this end of the cycle. If, when I get up in the morning and look in the mirror - if someone's in there - I call it a good day.
