Republican Congressman Kevin Brady of Texas:
Mr. Speaker, traveling to Iraq this past weekend to see firsthand how the surge is working, I really expected the worst. Instead I am very encouraged. Communities all across Iraq are turning against al Qaeda and working with Iraqi and coalition forces to take back their cities. Half of Baghdad is no longer safe for insurgents. Al Qaeda is not down and out but clearly back on its heels rejected by the very communities and religious leaders its claims to fight for. Make no mistake, there are still serious challenges, including high profile bombings, the need for Iraq s government to resolve key issues now, and Iran s continued support for terrorism. Im convinced the new strategy is working and we have impressive leaders and impressive troops in place to see even more progress. Mr. Speaker, while congress has the right to debate this war, it has the responsibility to help win it as well. That means letting this new strategy work to the end of the year or the beginning of the next if we are truly serious about a stable Iraq and safer America.

In the Wake of the Surge
That picture is awesome and perfectly appropriate.
Hey pissant how you doing??
Just fine, thanks. But I’m mad as he**. ;o) I take you feel the same way. ;o)
Move along now, nothing to see here...
Gee, imagine if we had tried this back in 2003, when there was still considerable support for the war? Bush might have saved his majority in Congress & cemented his legacy. Rumsfeld was an idiot who bought into the light, lean, and lethal doctrine. Nothing wrong with being lethal, but light & lean doesn’t work when you have to hold & pacify hostile terriory. How dumb is trying to fight a GWOT while actually DECREASING the size of the military?
Yeah, I think you’re right. I was a big Rummy fan, still am but that was a big mistake on his part. He went in on the cheap rather then put in overwhelming force and going about it in that fashion.
Of course, hind sight is 20-20 and I hate it when the libs play Monday Morning QB so now I’m guilty of it too.
I made the same comments back in 2003 when everyone was saying that all we had to do was train more Iraqis. They were right about that, just wrong about how long it would take. We would have been better off leaving the Baathist infrastructure in place and just replacing its head with a more cooperative snake.
I am retired military. When I first came in, one of the strengths of the US miltiary was its size and scale. When I left, everyone was parroting the line about how light & lean was so much better. In some cases (like Special Ops) this may be true, but we have stretched ourselves too thin and given away many of our historical advantages.
The surge is working!
