For the last week or so, there's been a rush on marriage licenses.
(Excerpt) Read more at jdnews.com ...
Most of the couples take their license from the register of deeds office and head right next door to the magistrate's office, said Lisa Thompson, assistant register of deeds.
The reason for the rush? Another impending deployment.
"You can pretty much tell in here when something's going on," Thompson said. "You can tell when somebody's coming back or leaving."
At Stop & Pawn on Marine Boulevard, manager Chris Heath said he's noticed a lot of Marines coming in to sell belongings before they deploy with the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit - which is slated to push off soon.
The unit's spokesman has not released information about exactly when the MEU will deploy and he offered no comment Thursday.
For many Marines, it's easier to sell things now and buy new items later, Heath said, rather than find a place to store everything. Others sell car stereo equipment before they store their cars, he said, or sell things they are afraid will get broken or stolen.
"(Shortly) before, I really notice an uptick," he said.
The increase at Uncle Bob's Self Storage on Center Street started in 2001 - when the first Gulf War began - and it hasn't let up much, manager Cyrus James said.
When an MEU gets back, the Marines will come get their things, and the store will lose 40 to 50 customers, James said. But then the next crew comes in, he said, and numbers are back up again.
"It's just been an ongoing cycle since 2001," he said.
This is all true and part of the cycle are the influx of parents seeing their son’s and daughters off when it’s time, as I am right now.
This is a tough time especially for mothers and wives, please pray for them and those that are leaving.
I think JENNIFER HLAD is a new reporter.... and all involved are a little confuse.... if i remember correctly Uncle Bob’s Self Storage on Center Street is post 91 Gulf War.
In 91 self storage became a scarce item when the first 7000 Marines Shipped out in August.. I live just outside the back gate to CLNC and now we have 4 Self Storage companies with in a mile
Another media creep lettin’ the enemy know about troop movements.
I like what the Iraqis call them: The First American War (1991)and the Second American War (2003). ;-)
if the enemy relied on our Daily Fish Wrapper for Intel
they would give up and go home
Kick a$$ first & take names later!
Kick’ em in the pants and send ‘em in the best traditions of the Corps...
We are in Jacksonville as I type. We’ll stay until they leave.
What ever happened to “Loose lips sink ships”?
I thought the same thing. The media shouldn't be putting this out, innocuous as it seems.
Military movements of any kind just shouldn't be discussed in public media.
At least they are being ambiguous about the deploy date.
You couldn't lay your hands on a AA to save your life.
L
now days right now I bet there isn’t a decent Garmin hand held GPS receiver in a 100 miles and batteries are at a premium
Still applies. You assume that the goal is to SAVE the ship. These people intend to sink it.
I don’t think a thread should be made of this story. Not only does it describe troop movements, but gives ideas on how our enemies could discern when troops are being deployed, without having to follow the media.
If you set down and do the right searches now... You can find the name of the Battle Group, the Ships in that group and their home port, the Subs and their ports the number of deploying personnel, units by name and the exact day. and that all came from Base papers and the local civilian newspapers. Thursday through Saturday spread over 4 states.
The catch is trying to figure out were they are at once they are underway!!! That used to keep us baffle until we just turned up some place. DOD only tells what any one needs to know...
When I used to Sail the 7 Sea’s ..... the bar girls would break out a computer read out of all Ship movements in the far east and tell me more then the command would. Now figure that out
That's funny about getting more info from the bar girls than your higher-ups. Nice to look at, gets you a drink, and lets you know what's going on -- that's what I call service.
