Gunman opens fire in Caesars Palace casino, wounds 2 (early Saturday morning, may be gang related)

Two people were wounded in a Las Vegas Strip casino Saturday after a man knocked down in a fist fight retrieved a gun and opened fire, police reported.

The gunshots rang out soon after a fight involving several people began about 4 a.m. near an elevator leading to a parking garage at the Caesars Palace hotel-casino, said Officer Ramon Denby of the Las Vegas Metro Police Department.

"Blows were landed, one guy was knocked to the floor," Denby said. "The gentleman who was knocked to the floor got into the elevator, went upstairs and got a firearm."

The man returned and opened fire as he stepped out of the elevator, Denby said. He hit one man in the leg and another in the arm.

The two were taken to University Medical Center, but their wounds were not believed to be life-threatening, Denby said.

"Investigators are now in the process of reviewing surveillance tape and talking to witnesses," Denby said, adding five people were detained as persons of interest.

No one was immediately arrested and the identities of the two wounded men were not immediately released.

Denby said the dispute was between two groups of people and police were investigating whether it may have been gang-related.

Caesars' spokesman Ken Langdon did not immediately respond to a cell phone message left Saturday seeking comment.

The shooting was the second inside a Las Vegas Strip casino in the past month.

A man police described as emotionally troubled opened fire July 6 inside the New York-New York casino, wounding four people.

More likely just someone trying to ‘keep it real’ by avenging a ‘dis’. You can’t have someone make you look like a punk in front of your crew without a response. And what better response than to shoot into a crowd of people that may or may not contain the individual on whom you seek to exact revenge?

Shouldn’t be too hard to solve this crime since Las Vegas has mandatory handgun registration. /s

"The gentleman who was knocked to the floor got into the elevator, went upstairs and got a firearm."

Doesn't sound very gentlemanly to me.

Remember when if something like this had happened at Caesars, the first thought would have been “the Mob”?

Las Vegas needs to clean up its act. This isn’t going to be good for business.

I sure wish police spokesmen would stop using the word "gentleman" when refering to thugs and criminals.

Why do the police call the perp “the gentleman”? Maybe “the individual” or “the antisocial individual” would be more accurate.

That's nothing. When I was there in December they had a gas outage on the strip and everyone was without hot water for showers and the kitchens were out of business for 24 hours. Now that was bad for business.

Caesars shooting suspect surrenders

Aug 9, 2007 10:36 AM EDT

Suspect Richard Shepherd

The man police say shot two people at Caesars Palace over the weekend has turned himself in. Las Vegas Police say 34-year-old Richard Earl Shepherd Junior surrendered with his lawyer just before noon Wednesday at the Clark County Detention Center.

Police had been looking for Shepherd since the shooting early Saturday morning on the Strip property. Both victims have been released from the hospital. Investigators believe the dispute may have been over a woman.

In light of recent events such as the bombing at the Luxor, the shooting at the New York, New York and this one at Caesars Palace, Metro is stepping up security.

“If someone wants to take a gun and walk into a casino, it can be done but hopefully it won’t be done. and this is an incident where we’re happy it was very minimal as far as injuries,” Captain Al Salinas with Metro said.

Shepherd is facing multiple counts, including attempted murder.

I-Team: Exclusive Sneak Peak at McCarran’s Terminal 3

Aug 23, 2007 08:22 PM EDT

More than 43 million travelers passed through McCarran International Airport in 2006 — the vast majority in Terminal 1. Work has already begun on a third terminal designed to ease congestion and to keep up with growth.

Terminal 3, as it’s called, is not scheduled to open until 2012. But anyone who’s spent any time near the airport lately knows preliminary work on the new facility is well underway. You may have seen the contruction, but you haven’t seen the design — until now.

The computer animation video of Terminal 3 was provided to Eyewitness News exclusively by McCarran International Airport.

The front door of the building will essentially sit where old Russell Road and Maryland Parkway used to intersect.

The facility will house fourteen gates, its own ticket counters, baggage claim and security areas. The $1.8 billion building will also have shopping and dining options and a multi-level parking garage.

Though it will connect to Terminal 1 through the D-gates, Terminal 3 is designed to be a standalone facility.

The new building will also accomodate international flights expanding international air service at McCarran, according to officials there.

Still a few years away, the new terminal is scheduled to open in 2012.

I-Team Reporter Colleen McCarty had the exclusive first look at McCarran’s future.
