Blue Springs police thwarted a plan Monday to cut a baby from the womb of a pregnant woman who was being held against her will at a Blue Springs motel.
The pregnant woman, 18, was lured into leaving her Clinton, Mo., home on the pretense of purchasing used baby items at a reasonable price from two women she had met on the Internet. Instead, the women picked up the woman in their vehicle and sprayed her with pepper spray, according to Blue Springs Police Detective Troy Pharr. The women assaulted the teen while in route to the Interstate Inn at Woods Chapel and Interstate 70. When they reached the motel, they tied the victim up in the bathroom.
"I think we made it there just in the nick of time," Pharr said during the news conference.
The plan was foiled when one of the suspects, Alisa D. Betts, 17, of Atchison, Kansas, "got cold feet" and called police claiming that a pregnant woman was screaming with labor pains at the motel. Jackson County prosecutors today charged Betts with first-degree kidnapping. She is being held in lieu of a $500,000 cash-only bond.
The other woman, Lauren M. Gash, 19, of Odessa, was charged with kidnapping and first-degree assault. She was being held on a $750,000 cash-only bond, Pharr said.
The victim, who is due next week, is being treated at an area hospital and asked for the media to respect her privacy until she is well enough to comment on the case. She is a recent graduate of Clinton High School in Clinton, Mo. The victim sent her former stepmother as a spokesperson for the family during a press conference at the Blue Springs Police Department.

Guilty and Guilty.
What ya wanna bet one of them had been faking a pregnancy and now needed to produce a child?
Looks like the cuffs couldn’t reach around their backs.
Dear God in Heaven-I say that sincerely, not blasphemously-how can people have such evil in them?
I used to live in that area,in the early 1980s. There was a Mother and daughter disappeared, and a woman who was pregnant, kidnapped as she talked to her boyfriend on a pay phone.
Although I left there many years ago, I often wonder if those cases were ever solved. I was the editor of a small weekly newspaper then, and had an eerie experience myself. I went to work one day at 5 a.m., right after these women disappeared, and had a man pacing in front of my office window (in Kimberling City, and the office was open windows, and I was alone there). I may have been too paranoid, but I called the police from my office phone on this guy. He pulled away before they arrived, but I provided a tag number and make/model of his truck.
BUMP!
I could be totally wrong, but my initial response was they were a lesbian couple. I could be wrong.
You did right. In this world, I wonder if you can be too paranoid about things like that. I hate it.
The pregnant girl who was abducted, while talking with her boyfriend from a pay phone, was in Clinton, MO., if my memory serves me right.
Her boyfriend was cleared as a suspect, he actually jumped in his car and tried to go save her. He heard her screaming as the pay phone was jerked from her. She had given the boyfriend a desciption of a man in a pickup truck with a bass sticker on the back window circling around right before she was abducted. She told the boyfriend the guy in the truck was acting strange. Of course, this girl was on a pay phone in the middle of nowhere at about 3 a.m. Not a smart choice to begin with.
Before I moved from there, there was no break in the case. But there was also the case of the mother and daughter disappearance. I was pretty skittish at the time and for good reason, there was a serial killer around there.
That’s why I called the police from my office. I wonder if these cases were ever solved. Also, there was a case of a young college student disappearing, her car found at the side of the road, and the theory at the time was that she broke down on the side of the road and someone offered to help her. I think she was found murdered later. I just remember being very scared at the time, because there were a lot of young women disappearing.
It’s true: evil lurks in every corner of the Earth, sometimes in places you just don’t expect to find it.
Crystal meth. Eastern Jackson County (MO) is per capita the leading producer of the narcotic on planet Earth. The crap is mostly produced in Independence—where I grew up thirty years ago. Yikes!!!
The “redneck heroin” or something, isn’t it called? (No offense to rednecks, if I knew my family tree that far back, no doubt I’d have whole branches of them). Drugs-one of the scourges of this planet, amongst so many others. Even so, come Lord Jesus!
Or both. Looks like they needed two infants to excuse those Mickey D's bellies. And whatever brands make low rise jeans in *that* size really needs to examine their bottom lines!
You are correct. Most people think it’s oxycotin (redneck heroin). Living in the KC area and raised in Independence, I unfortunately know a thing or two about crystal meth on a “non-personal” level. :)
Better safe than dead, I’d done the same. I carry now.
Don’t feel alone, I don’t think there are too many families in this country who haven’t been either directly or tangentially touched by this plague. It hurts to think of, and it hurts to think that it’s necessary to think of it. It’s difficult for even children to enjoy their innocence now, when the minds of adults are so degraded.
...let alone these degrading adults (dare I say it) degrading a child’s innocence by shooting, snorting, or injesting (orally) their narcotics in front of them....
I agree. I can’t believe how unsuspecting we were growing up, and the mess had already begun before my time. Then, it was something you read in the newspaper, though. My older female relatives were “paranoid”, as we thought then. Now we know better-they were right. When my husband goes out of town, I make the rounds checking locks on everything, even my car in the attached garage. I am as spooky as any old lady now (not that I’m so young).
Depraved people will do even worse. It makes my heart literally hurt when it comes to mind, so I try to not allow it, if not necessary. Some days I just have to ignore the world for my own peace of mind. The things children can see in real life now, much less on TV...
