Democrats To Debate Before Gay Audience Republicans Turn Down Invitation

POSTED: 5:30 pm EDT August 9, 2007 UPDATED: 5:32 pm EDT August 9, 2007 LOS ANGELES -- There are mixed feelings from the gay-rights community about Thursday's historic Democratic presidential forum devoted solely to their issues.

On one hand, it's a major milestone for the movement and a sign that the Democratic contenders want to court their votes.

On the other hand, there's frustration that none of the front-runners is calling for the legalization of gay marriage, while two support it: Rep. Dennis Kucinich and Mike Gravel.

The forum, to be held in Los Angeles, is co-sponsored by the Human Rights Campaign, a gay-rights group that has become increasingly influential in Democratic politics, and by Logo, the gay-oriented cable channel that will provide a live telecast and Internet simulcast.

The six participating Democrats are:

* Sen. Hillary Clinton * Sen. John Edwards * Sen. Michael Gravel * Rep. Dennis Kucinich * Sen. Barack Obama * Gov. Bill Richardson

All of the Democratic candidates support a federal ban on job discrimination against gays. They also favor repeal of the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy and support civil unions for same-sex couples.

All of the Democratic candidates support a federal ban on job discrimination against gays.

Already against the law. Homosexuals, as individuals, have civil rights just like everyone else.

They also favor repeal of the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy

Keep your mouths shut (literally and figuratively) and there wouldn't be problems.

and support civil unions for same-sex couples.

Brain-dead states are already doing this.

I'm glad Republicans are avoiding this like the plague, although I'm surprised Rudy didn't go.

Expect a plethora of sidestepping, double talk, and flat out deceit, just like any other debate. The quotes ought to be interesting though...

One question that needs to be asked.....”How would you stop aids?” I wonder if Hillary has the guts to tell them “Stop bending over.”

Good grief. Pretty soon they’ll have a debate in some seedy Greenwich Village warehouse filled with a bunch of pervs and exhibitionists. Just to say they’re breaking new ground.

The Party Of Abnormal Americans panders to the pervert crowd. I doubt many will watch a gay-themed cable channel.

Ask Hillary! whether she thinks that San Francisco should re-instate the Castro Halloween Party that they just canceled today.

No Castro Halloween this year, and no official S.F. alternative.

How can they be sure everyone admitted to the audience truly is gay?

Is there a tryout?

Homosex is not a civil right. Those who practice it have the right to free speech, etc. They can try to persuade people that homosex is not perverse. But the perversity itself is not a civil right, or it shouldn’t be. It never was in the history of our nation, not until the Supreme Court rewrote the laws.
