The experts are behind the curve on this one. What we really need are books on how to deal with these kids now that they’re becoming established in the workplace.

As I am fond of pointing out, self-esteem is a vice. Indeed, it is numbered among the ‘eight grevious vices’ by St. John Cassian (the other seven are familiar to Western Christians as ‘the seven deadly sins’).

Self-esteem is an entitlement. The author is confusing self-esteem with ego. This is a null article.

One popular method tells teachers not to correct students spelling or grammar, arguing that kids should be independent spellers so they can be treated as individuals.
I about tore my hair out trying to understand some of the papers that these self esteemed individuals had ritin.

What these idiots don't realize is that both self respect AND self esteem need to be earned. Self esteem is "being proud of yourself." The question "why should I be proud of myself" needs to be asked... When it's not earned, it's not only worthless, it can lead to serious problems with the individual, as we've been seeing for quite some time.

“people with high self-esteem tend to be unwilling to take responsibility for their own failures and bad behavior.”
This is the meat of the article. The spoiled little brats in school today are shining examples of this. It’s always somebody elses fault.

As a teacher, what I find going on is a vast effort to “give” children esteem/positive self image. These can’t be given, they must be developed. They are not developed by repeating over and over that Johnny is a good boy (or displaying those “My child is a Terrific Kid” bumper stickers.) True esteem comes from the individual setting and achieving real/noble goals.

In drug and alcohol rehab, the counselors push to instill and establish "self-esteem" in their patients.
Man, that was last the last thing some of us needed. :-)

The over paid socialists squatting behind a desk at the front of classrooms in the schools near you know full well the curriculum they teach results in annual advancement of unqualified students.
Such students are therefore guaranteed to fail the next year due to gross lack of mastery of basic facts of the previous year’s curriculum.
I suggest these socialist bachelor’s children be sued for improper enrichment.
Educators are a class well deserving of being sued.
Educators are also a class with substantial assets, well worth being sued.

I think self esteem and self confidence are being used interchangeably way too much. People, especially young people and children, need to learn to acquire the confidence to perform outside their comfort zones, but also learn that when they inevitably screw up when going outside their comfort zone, that they will be held accountable, but retain the confidence to try again until they get it right.

What's worse, we've known this for a LONG time. In an article titled "Evil: Inside Human Violence and Cruelty," in the
Psychological Review back in 1996,Roy Baumeister wrote about how they studied what happens when individuals are too optimistic about themselves. They examined self-esteem in serial killers, hit men, gang leaders, violent criminals, spouse abusers, and bullies. They thought they would find that people "drifted" into these behaviors because of low self-esteem--but the opposite was found. The low-lifes they studied had enormously high self-esteem, creating a sense of grandiosity, supremacy, invulnerability, and the belief that they should not be corrected. They concluded:
Perpetrators of violence are typically people who think very highly of themselves. In the United States the push to raise everyone's self-esteem seems ill-advised.This was known over a decade ago, and probably before that. I haven't read this particular book, but it seems to elaborate on the article I mention here.
