A Simple Majority Vote Would End Madness... (George "Slumberin" Skelton Alert)
Los Angeles Times ^ | 08/20/2007 | George "Slumberin" Skelton

That gets the support of the Legislature's most fiscally conservative member, veteran Sen. Tom McClintock (R-Thousand Oaks).

Let the majority party rule and be accountable for the consequences, McClintock says. Give 'em the rope to hang themselves. And with a two-thirds vote still required for tax hikes, he notes, "spending can't run away."

I do agree with Tom McClintock. Let the Democrats pass a budget on their own but require a two thirds majority for tax increases and approval of deficit spending. That would ensure accountability. If people don't like what the majority party is doing on the budget, they can vote it out of office. The present version of the two-thirds rule simply encourages irresponsibility and holding up the budget on unrelated matters. I don't agree with Far Lefty Los Angeles Times Sacramento Bureau Chief George "Slumberin" Skelton that often, but I do think majority rule should be allowed on the budget - with appropriate safeguards in place.

Why stop at just the budget ? If the majority party is to rule, they should take responsibility for taxes too. Let voters know who/which party to blame for tax increases as well.

I can imagine the Democrats raising taxes sky high in California. That would cause a stampede out of the state. That's the plus side to giving them the power to hike taxes at will. So far, the voters haven't agreed.

I agree. Let the moonbats have full reign (pun intended) and see if the moonbats like living under their own polices.

I can’t agree. The Democrats will use their majority to buy votes with massive welfare giveaways to both the “poor” and the middle class funded with big tax hikes on the evil undesrving “rich,” which will reach down to you, the real middle class. You’ll have an awfully good chance of getting irreversible socialism with a capital “C” (Communism). As F.A.Hayek wrote, this would be the “The Road to Serfdom.”
