The son of Shelby County Mayor A C Wharton has been sentenced to two years probation under a plea agreement in a statutory rape case.
A C Wharton III, 35, was accused of raping a 13-year-old Knox County girl he met on the Internet.
He has been released from a Knox County jail where he spent four months, Knox County Special Prosecutor John Gill told WMC-TV of Memphis.
“This is not to a level of defense at all, but he had some mental issues related to prescription drugs that caused him, well, contributed to his behavior,” Gill said.
A C Wharton III will now be a registered sex offender.
The teen said she met Wharton around 9:30 p.m. March 12 while text messaging in an Internet chat room. She used the screen name “pinkhottie” and claimed to be older, at least 15. He claimed to be a 20-year-old University of Tennessee football player.
Eventually, the chat turned to sex and she gave him her phone number. He called her several times, according to phone records.
When she told him her mother and two preschool sisters were going to be gone for a little while, he asked if he could come over. Wharton arrived sometime after 3 a.m. The encounter lasted 30 minutes and Wharton left.
In June, a Germantown psychologist, Dr. John V. Ciocca, examined Wharton in jail.
In a letter to Wharton’s attorney, Ciocca said Wharton is bipolar, has Adult Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and is addicted to Ambien, a prescription sleeping pill.
“He (Wharton) admits to impulsive behavior when seeking or under the influence of excessive amounts of Ambien,” Ciocca wrote.
Wharton, who had been working as a car dealer, had been held on $50,000 bond.
Probation is bad enough for this crime, but to be able to have his record EXPUNGED is unconscionable. WHY should a convicted predator of children be allowed to have his/her record EXPUNGED simply because they don't get caught in the next 2 years?
A sex offender who offends against a child should not be able to have their record EXPUNGED.
IF he'd had been any one but a politicians son he'd gotten sent to prison.
To his credit Mayor Warton did not rush to bail his son out of jail.
His whacker should be “expunged”...............

And there was a lady in Texas who got 23 years for having sex with a 16-year-old boy.
If he was a republican, it would have been in the headline.
If there is no party affiliation mentioned that they are a democrat is a certainty.

We are failing to get the message through to kids. They are somehow not getting it that there are dangerous people who want to harm them, and that it's not a joke.
We've taken some static from people about our decision to homeschool our kids, but I can tell you this for certain: my daughter (who will be 13 in a few months) would never even be able to dream up such a slutty screen name, and would not be chatting about sex with some unknown guy. Period. She hasn't had years of liberal education trying to sexualize her from kindergarten on. She just doesn't go there, but we see it in some of her friends from the neighborhood sometimes. Girls who are a year or two younger trying to act like they are 20 something with they way they dress, put on too much makeup and talk about boys.
Throw this scumbag in a deep hole and pray for this girl and her family.
Actually it's more corrupt than the Mafia. The Mafia made no bones about what it was about. The "Justice System" crows long and loud about justice when in all actuality it performs as an opressive revenue generating mechanism while at the same time preserving the status quo.

The drugs were sleeping pills.

Exactly. Notice that there’s no mention of a FATHER in this home either? Just a Mom, a teen and two more pre-schoolers. Any FATHER available for ANY of these kids?
No wonder this young girl was victimized. She was a sitting duck, as are endless young girls growing up without a FATHER to make her feel special and cherished and protected.

Was this her first entrapment of an older man and what steps have been taken to find a more age appropriate activity for this girl to do at 3am?
