Has Maliki Ended The Insurgency?breaking news
http://www.captainsquartersblog.com/mt/ ^

Posted on 08/22/2007 1:59:21 PM PDT by WBL 1952

Earlier today, the Italian news service AKI reported that the presumed leader of the largest insurgency in Iraq will start cooperating with the Iraqi government. Izzat Ibrahim al-Douri, one of the highest-ranking members of Saddam Hussein's government, reportedly pledged to work with Iraqi and American forces to fight al-Qaeda in Iraq:

The leader of Iraq's banned Baath party, Izzat Ibrahim al-Douri, has decided to join efforts by the Iraqi authorities to fight al-Qaeda, one of the party's former top officials, Abu Wisam al-Jashaami, told pan-Arab daily Al Hayat. "AlDouri has decided to sever ties with al-Qaeda and sign up to the programme of the national resistance, which includes routing Islamist terrorists and opening up dialogue with the Baghdad government and foreign forces," al-Jashaami said.

Al-Douri has decided to deal directly with US forces in Iraq, according to al-Jashaami. He figures in the 55-card deck of "most wanted" officials from the former Iraqi regime issued by the US government.

In return, for cooperating in the fight against al-Qaeda, al-Douri has asked for guarantees over his men's safety and for an end to Iraqi army attacks on his militias.

Recent weeks have seen a first step in this direction, when Baathist fighters cooperated with Iraqi government forces in hunting down al-Qaeda operatives in the volatile Diyala province and in several districts of the capital, Baghadad.

This could be game, set, and match for the Iraq War. Some smaller insurgent elements assisted in clearing Baqubah as a test to see whether an alliance with Americans would work. Apparently, the experiment worked. If al-Douri accepts the authority of the elected Iraqi government, then almost all of the resistance in western Iraq will disappear -- leaving AQI very exposed.

Look on the bright side: at least Saddam is dead and not coming back.

And it looks like his boy, Chemical Ali, is going to be following him reeeall soon! That will please the Kurds.

Maybe we could even hold the necktie party in Halabja, where Ali got his nickname.

“I hate to say this, but if we don’t largely put an end to this war well before November 2008, the Dems then in charge of Congress and the White House be surrendering entirely early in 2009 no matter what the status is. We’ll be leaving the Kurds to the gentle mercies of the Iranians and maybe the Turks”

If we don’t bring down the Iranian regime, it won’t matter whether we largely put an end to this war and we’ll be leaving the Kurds and Iraqis and others in the region to the IRI.

“We can’t do that to the Kurds.”

Why, Bush I abandoned the Kurds to Saddam back in 1992. He didn’t gas them, but he certainly encouraged them to revolt, and when they did was not there with the support they needed to get the job done.

We’ve done enough to them already anyway, what’s a little more?

Wanna bet Good ‘Old Carl Levin knew this and had to come out ahead of the news cycle with his “well, the surge has seen some successes”! I think on the stock exchange its called “insider trading” only with politicians its backpedalling so as not to look like the LOSERS they really are!

Bill Roggio comments at the Weekly Standard:

Iraq Report: Al Douri Flips on al Qaeda

************************************EXCERPT*******************************

As Coalition and Iraq troops continue the hunt for al Qaeda throughout Iraq, a senior Baathist who years ago threw in his lot with al Qaeda has flipped. Izzat Ibrahim al-Douri, the former vice president of Saddam's revolutionary council and number 6 on the "deck of cards" of the 55 most wanted, has "decided to sever ties with al-Qaeda and sign up to the programme of the national resistance, which includes routing Islamist terrorists and opening up dialogue with the Baghdad government and foreign forces," Abu Wisam al-Jashaami told Adnkronos International. "In return, for cooperating in the fight against al-Qaeda, al-Douri has asked for guarantees over his men's safety and for an end to Iraqi army attacks on his militias."

I think it’s all baloney.....might well be some Levin taqiyya

whatever it is, this story floating around is certain to PO every iraqi shia and probably some kurds as well; neither of which is good for maliki or Bush/us. House of Saud might be in it, too.

More from the Roggio article at the Weekly Standard...see #115:

*******************************************************

While it is unclear how much influence al Douri possesses with former Baathists turned al Qaeda, or how much of Saddam's money he controls, his turn against al Qaeda serves as an indicator of how actors in the insurgency view the situation on the ground. Al Douri clearly sees that the Coalition and Iraqi government have momentum against the insurgency and al Qaeda.

I thought he had died of skin cancer over a year ago.

I thought he was dead, too.

"A Nov. 11, 2005 statement attributed to Iraq's ousted Baath Party reported that Izzat Ibrahim al-Douri had died that day, possibly from Leukemia from which he had been known to suffer from since the late 1990s.

Izzat [Ezzet] Ibrahim al-Douri, former vice president of Saddam's revolutionary council, was believed to be behind some attacks against coalition forces and Iraqis. He is the "King of Clubs" No. 6 on the coalition's most-wanted list. Following the capture of Saddam Hussein he became the most wanted man in Iraq."
