Earlier today, the Italian news service AKI reported that the presumed leader of the largest insurgency in Iraq will start cooperating with the Iraqi government. Izzat Ibrahim al-Douri, one of the highest-ranking members of Saddam Hussein's government, reportedly pledged to work with Iraqi and American forces to fight al-Qaeda in Iraq:
The leader of Iraq's banned Baath party, Izzat Ibrahim al-Douri, has decided to join efforts by the Iraqi authorities to fight al-Qaeda, one of the party's former top officials, Abu Wisam al-Jashaami, told pan-Arab daily Al Hayat. "AlDouri has decided to sever ties with al-Qaeda and sign up to the programme of the national resistance, which includes routing Islamist terrorists and opening up dialogue with the Baghdad government and foreign forces," al-Jashaami said.
Al-Douri has decided to deal directly with US forces in Iraq, according to al-Jashaami. He figures in the 55-card deck of "most wanted" officials from the former Iraqi regime issued by the US government.
In return, for cooperating in the fight against al-Qaeda, al-Douri has asked for guarantees over his men's safety and for an end to Iraqi army attacks on his militias.
Recent weeks have seen a first step in this direction, when Baathist fighters cooperated with Iraqi government forces in hunting down al-Qaeda operatives in the volatile Diyala province and in several districts of the capital, Baghadad.
This could be game, set, and match for the Iraq War. Some smaller insurgent elements assisted in clearing Baqubah as a test to see whether an alliance with Americans would work. Apparently, the experiment worked. If al-Douri accepts the authority of the elected Iraqi government, then almost all of the resistance in western Iraq will disappear -- leaving AQI very exposed.

You've got to understand something important: Iraq is not our country, nor is it our colony, territory, vassal, or satrapy.
That means that in the end, it's not our decision to make, the Iraqi people are the ones that have to do what it takes to end the war.
Look on the bright side: at least Saddam is dead and not coming back.

There was a saying by a former Soviet submarine captian upon meeting an American counterpart that has always stuck with me, “It’s not always important who won or lost but that we survived.”
Despite tremendous cultural and religous divides between opposing forces in Iraq human nature IS human nature and even die hard soldiers tire of constant combat. We’re not a species bent on fighting for fighting’s sake. Every soldier is fighting for someone and something and when it appears that your cause is lost it is best to make peace with a merciful enemy. Better to live any kind of life than die for nothing.
I hate to say this, but if we don't largely put an end to this war well before November 2008, the Dems then in charge of Congress and the White House be surrendering entirely early in 2009 no matter what the status is. We'll be leaving the Kurds to the gentle mercies of the Iranians and maybe the Turks.

Of course she is. He is finally becoming effective, and the traitorous Demscum simply cannot afford for the US to have any level of success in Iraq. Her call is a transparent attempt to spike any success in Iraq -- plays right to her base.
But should this turn out to be a bad call (as, hopefully, it appears), it will be reported the day after tomorrow that she knew all along what a great guy al-Maliki was. In fact,one of Chelsea's middle names is al-Maliki, because she had a feeling way back then he'd turn into something someday.
And the sheeple and the MSM will lap up whatever tall tale she spins.

Sounds to me like we’ll have to make a decision.
They get to watch while General Petraeus, wearing a crown of laurel and oak, rides up Pennsylvania Avenue on a tank, with hundreds of Al Q'aeda scum in chains stumbling along before him.
Sounds too good to be true, but I`ll keep my fingers crossed. I have`nt seen anything about this on FoxNews or CNN.
