You don’t execute your new best asset..you merely watch him very carefully.

Emperor Hirohito should have been executed too... but he proved to be far more useful to us alive.

Well, perhaps. If leaving him alive is sufficient to effectively stabilize Iraq into something approaching a civilized nation, then it's worth it to leave him alive.

Of course, leaving al-Douri alive also leaves open the possibility that he could take over, and reconstitute Iraq along its former Saddamist lines.

It's a finicky trade ... but it's entirely possible that the preponderance of benefit would come from letting the bastard continue to draw breath.

All things in due time. Priority is to get the Sunni militias either disarmed or hunting al-Qaeda a$$holes, most of whom are non-Iraqi and thus 'foreigners', of whom Iraqis are traditionally not fond in any case. If al-Douri helps out in this, accept his help.

We can wait (quite a while if need be) for al-Douri to get his 9mm brain haemorrhage.

Plus, this joker must know that he'll be shot on the spot at the first sign of duplicity.

If this possibility turns out to be real it will be for one reason only—al Douri knew he was about to be taken down. Even if he cuts some kind of deal I don’t care just so long as it moves the people he was leading to our side.

I suspect any deal struck will include his leaving the country. He’s still hated by many Iraqis and they won’t give up until they kill him. His disappearance down some rat hole of a Saudi or Jordanian prison would be an optimum outcome. But his departure from Iraq is the main goal.
