If you do decide to tune in, be sure to have the right day. One day earlier (Thursday, August 23rd) happens to be 24 hours of Jane Fonda movies.

I see my favorite isn’t listed, “The Killers”, with Lee Marvin.

They are not showing what may be his best performance (”The Killers” directed by Don Siegel):

"King's Row" was the best of the lot. It's astonishing that Jack Warner couldn't see Reagan's star quality. "King's Row" was supposed to be a Bob Cummings movie, but Reagan stole it right out from under him. Warner couldn't see that Cummings wasn't a strong enough actor to hold a movie together, and his best work came later on TV in a light situation comedy called "Love That Bob" during the Fifties.

It's a sign of Warner's blindness that in 1966, when he was told that Reagan was going to run for governor of California, he said, "No, Bob Cummings for governor, Ronald Reagan for best friend."

In "King's Row", take a closer look at the hints of perversion in Claude Raines' relationship with his daughter, played by Anne Sheridan. The Hays Office made it impossible to tackle the subject of incest directly, but thanks to Raines the creepiness is there.

Looks like they left Fonda's best work off the showcase.

It would be funny to have a Ronald Reagan movie on The Essentials while Carrie Fisher is co-hosting.
