Arthur Bremer, who shot and paralyzed Alabama Gov. George Wallace in 1972, will be released from a Maryland prison this year.

"It appears at this point in time that Arthur Bremer will be leaving the Maryland Division of Corrections sometime in late 2007," said Mark Vernarelli, director of public information for the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services. "He has served all of the sentence for which he can be held."

Bremer, who turned 57 this week, is scheduled for release on Dec. 16 from the Maryland Correctional Institute-Hagerstown, said Rae Sheeley, a case management specialist at the prison.

I suggest that all of the Presidential candidates for the 2008 election have their Secret Service agents know what a current picture of this man’s facial characteristics looks like. This guy is a nutcase and I’d bet money he’s going after someone else when he gets out.

“From out of the north a stranger came,
a comic book in his hand,
a man
The kind of a man the south would need
to tame a troubled land
‘Cause the point of a gun
was the only law that Bremer understood
When it came to shooting
straight and fast,
he was mighty good.

Many a man would face his gun,
and many a man would fall.
The man who shot Governor Wallace,
he shot Governor Wallace,
He was the weirdest of them all.”

Gov. George Wallace shortly before his death:

“I don’t hate blacks. The day I said ‘segregation forever,’ I never said a thing that would upset a black person unless it was segregation. I never made fun of ‘em about inequality and all that kind of stuff. But my vehemence was against the federal government folks. I didn’t make people get mad against black people. I made ‘em get mad against the courts.”

His supporters were crucial to Reagan almost winning the nomination in 1976 and winning in 1980. Fortunately, many southern states allowed cross over voting in the primary.

I’m not trying to start any spats, but, according to his bio, Bremer was a failed janitor, prior to the shooting. Just how is he supposed to function outside the walls after 35 years in a structured habitat?

Somehow it seems like the liberals, lead by TK, should be calling for his release ... in the name of justice, dontchaknow. Like Gitmo, or abu graib. Maybe they don't cuz he shot someone from the wrong party.

Nah, they wouldn't be that political.

He will soon qualify for SSI, food stamps, etc. He’ll live out his days in public housing voting the straight democrat ticket.

Well Governor Wallace, segregation is kind of a big thing.

That's like saying you haven't said a thing that would upset a Jew... except endorsing the Holocaust.

Also, Wallace's statement isn't even true. In 1958, Wallace said after being defeated in a Democratic primary, "Seymore, you know why I lost that governor's race?... I was outniggered by John Patterson. And I'll tell you here and now, I will never be outniggered again." Wallace said lots of things that upset black people.
