Media Advisory

Not Only Van Doos

- August 24, 2007

Montreal, (Quebec). – To show respect to the majority of the military personnel currently deployed in Afghanistan, who work in collaboration, but are not part of the Royal 22e Regiment, we want to specify this fact and ask the media’s cooperation regarding the diffusion of complete and fair information.

Master Corporal Christian Duchesne belonged to the 5th Field Ambulance, part of the 4th Health Service Group.

The Joint Task Force – Afghanistan (JTF-Afg) Rotation 4 deployed in the summer of 2007 is comprised of approximately 2300 soldiers representing many different professions in the Canadian Forces. The majority of those troops come from over fifty different units and regiments in Canada. A third of them actually belong to the Royal 22e Regiment. Even if the core of these men and women come from Valcartier, many also come from other regions of Quebec and the rest of Canada.

For the complete list of regiments and units comprised in the JTF-Afg, you may consult the following website: http://www.5gbmc.ca/spip.php?article557

COMPOSITION OF JOINT TASK FORCE AFGHANISTAN (JTF AFG)

Joint Task Force Afghanistan (JTF AFG) Rotation 4, deployed in summer 2007, comprises nearly 2,500 CF members from all Army professions and the medical and legal branches of the Canadian Forces. The complexity of Canada’s commitment in Afghanistan requires that representatives from all CF occupations be involved. The in-depth knowledge that all CF members have of their respective fields contributes immensely to furthering the mission of the Canadian Forces in Afghanistan.

Although most of these men and women are from Valcartier, there are also many from other regions of Quebec, such as Outaouais, Rimouski, Trois Rivières, Montreal, Sherbrooke and the Saguenay, as well as from the rest of Canada (see list below).

The media advisory refers to Master Corporal Christian Duchesne as being of the 5th Field Ambulance

The unit should more properly be referred to as 5e Ambulance de campagne.

The translation is correct but as a francophone unit it ought to be referred to by its French name.

So I shouldn't refer to the 12e Régiment blindé du Canada – Trois-Rivières as the " The 12th 'Blind of Canada' Regiment from Three Rivers"?

"12e Régiment blindé" translates as "12th Armoured Regiment"

This regiment started out in 1862 as the Three Rivers Regiment. It was originally raised as a militia regiment. (A militia regiment is a reserve force regiment)

It went through several name changes. During WWII it was officially became the "12th Armoured (Three Rivers Regiment)". In 1968 it became "12e Régiment blindé du Canada" and its Trois-Rivières reserve force became "12e Régiment blindé du Canada (Milice)", both having the same military heritage.

Here are its battle honours:

The Great War: Amiens, Sibérie 1918-19

The Second World War: Débarquement en Sicile, Grammichele, Piazza Armerina, Valguarnera, Agira, Adrano, Vallée du Troina, Sicile 1943, Termoli, Le Ravin, Ortona, Cassino II, Ligne Gustav, Vallée du Liri, Ligne Hitler, Ligne Trasimene, Arezzo, L'Avance à Florence, Monte La Pieve, Monte Spaduro, Italie 1943-1945, Apeldoorn, Nord-Ouest de L'Europe 1945
