McKinney Dismisses Pelosi, Embraces Sheehan Challenge
The Nation via Yahoo News ^ | 27 August 2007 | John Nichols

Cynthia McKinney, who served six terms as an often-dissenting Democratic congresswoman from Georgia, is as disenchanted with the cautious course of her old party as the millions of Americans who -- through their low approval rating for the current Congress -- are registering frustration at the failure of Democratic leaders in the House and Senate to aggressively oppose the war in Iraq and to confront the high crimes and misdemeanors of the Bush-Cheney administration.

McKinney confirmed the depth of her disenchantment at a rally Saturday in Kennebunkport, Maine, where thousands of activists gathered to protest at one of the president's several vacation homes.

McKinney denounced both Bush and what she referred to as "an exhaustively complicit Democratic Party"

What of the leader of the Democrats in the House where she once served?

McKinney and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-California, did not always see eye to eye even before McKinney lost a 2006 Democratic primary to a challenger who promised to work more closely with party leaders. But now McKinney is taking the bold step of urging San Francisco voters to replace Pelosi with anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan, who is mounting an aggressive independent challenge to the speaker in the November, 2008, election.

McKinney and Pelosi were often at odds, even before McKinney lost a 2006 Democratic primary to a challenger who promised to work more closely with party leaders. But, now

Urging anti-war insurgents to challenge both recalcitrant Republicans and disappointing Democrats, McKinney said:

I have to admit that I'm saddened deeply by what my Opposition Party has become. When George Bush stole two Presidential elections from them, they didn't even fight for themselves! And now they're defined by their failure to fight for us.

That means, that now, more than ever, we the people are the ones who have to take our country back in the most fundamental way.

We don't have to settle for injustice, environmental degradation, and more war.

We refuse to be complicit in torture, war crimes, crimes against humanity, and crimes against the peace.

Our children deserve a better country and the world deserves a better partner.

That's why I'm happy to see Cindy Sheehan run for Congress. I want Cindy to win.

I want to see peace people, all over this country, run for office on a platform to stop the war machine now.

We can do it, and we can win.

To be sure, Sheehan's race remains an uphill run. But support from McKinney and other nationally-prominent anti-war leaders will undoubtedly benefit the candidacy of the mother of slain Iraq War soldier Casey Sheehan, whose demand two years ago that President Bush meet with her to discuss the Iraq occupation ignited the peace movement.

McKinney's backing could be of some consequence for Sheehan's independent candidacy. The always outspoken and often controversial former congresswoman has a following among many progressives in the San Francisco Bay Area, who see her as an uncompromising critic of the status quo. Additionally, McKinney is a prominent African-American who has served with Pelosi, a fact that could make her support of Sheehan meaningful in a city where neighborhoods such as Hunters Point are home to well-established and politically-astute minority populations.

McKinney could have an even higher political profile by the time the 2008 elections roll around.

The veteran civil-rights and social justice campaigner, who has stumped in recent weeks for several third-party and independent candidates who have taken strong anti-war stands, has been boomed by some Greens as a potential 2008 presidential candidate. When she appeared in June at the annual Green Party of the United States national meeting of the Greens in Reading, Pennsylvania, McKinney was greeted with chants of "Run, Cynthia, run!"

Please let it be so.

Ah, hell. Never mind. California Republicans will drop the ball on this one too.

I think it would be great if the idiot voters in S.F. replaced Pelousy with Shee-hag. Then she could go to Washington and be shocked to find out that she isn’t “Speaker” and is instead a worthless “independent” who is ignored by both parties, making statements more outlandish than McKinney.

Meanwhile, Pelousy can grow grapes in Napa with the help of all her illegal workers and wonder why her phone doesn’t ring anymore.

When George Bush stole two Presidential elections from them,

Nothing will ever sway them from this view...especially the facts.

This really could be huge. Pelosi has a large black population in her district as well as far left loons who now feel she’s not far left enough.

I would be tickled pink to see Cindy take over for Pelosi.

Nuts of a feather. The RATS created this monster by pandering to the far left, now I hope it destroys them.

McKinney belongs in a padded cell, politicians just don't come any nuttier than her. If Sheehan gets elected she'll become the nuttiest.
