PRIME Minister John Howard is leading condemnation against the decision to include two entries in a prestigious art competition that ridicule the Christian faith.
A statue of the Virgin Mary shrouded by a Muslim burqa and a holographic image of Osama bin Laden that morphs into Jesus Christ when moved on an angle have sparked outrage from politicians and church leaders.
The "artworks" were submitted as entries for the Blake Prize - Australia's top religious art competition.
Yesterday, Mr Howard said the pieces were insulting and lacked any artistic merit.
"The choice of such artwork is gratuitously offensive to the religious beliefs of many Australians," he said.
He was backed by Premier Morris Iemma, who said the inclusion of the artworks was extremely questionable.
"I haven't seen either of these pieces but from what has been described to me, it's a pity they were not stolen instead of the Dutch masterpiece," Mr Iemma said, referring to the recent theft of a painting from the Art Gallery of NSW.
The artworks are the latest in a string of offensive pieces that have infuriated Christians while their creators hide behind the veil of "art".

Still, Christians shouldn't try to kill or physically attack these supposed 'artists.' They should politely, but firmly, protest, as they seem to be doing already.
Here in the United States, one of the major television networks was going to air a show in which Christ visits and communicates with some preacher named Daniel. Christians sent many letters to the network, and they pulled the show from their lineup. People weren't killed. There weren't global riots over this show. And the peaceful protest was successful.
No one steals something that is worthless.
Ah, this art is "religious art"? Pathetic.
Why allow them to be shown? Enough is enough. How can they allow obvious Christian haters that want to push the envelope to participate?
That says it all doesn't it? Plus the part about the painter of the Jesus bin Laden being a lawyer. Oh, and I love the part about how "the Christian community doesn't view art". Excuse me? They have a lot of art museums in Tehran, do they? God bless John Howard for speaking up. He has my complete respect.
For the most part, these artists can offend our Christian sensibilities to their hearts’ content.
It isn’t as if Christians are going to declare war on the artists for their bad taste and poor choices. On the other hand, artists who raise the ire of Muslims have a bad habit of ending up dead.
Now, which religion would you rather offend these days?
Fitting that artist Andy Warhol said, while commenting on his often quoted cliché: ‘It’s the place where my prediction from the sixties finally came true: “In the future everyone will be famous for fifteen minutes.” I’m bored with that line. I never use it anymore. My new line is, “In fifteen minutes everybody will be famous.”’
the communist philosophy was passed to the arabs during WWI
If said “artist” wanted to display some actual courage and avant-garde determination then the piece would have shown Osama morphing into Mohammed and vice-versa. But of course leftist twits do not take on Islam, nooooo, it’s so much safer and easier to mock and demean Christians and Jews.
Tehran probably does have a fair amount of art museums.
So the riot is off?

Jesus/Osama aka Bearded Orientals: Making the Empire Cross, is one in a series of ten images which chronicle the escapades of Jihad Joe, a bearded and robed plastic figurine bent on world domination. With its parody of crusading rhetoric and flag-waving media hype, the exhibition bears strong resonances to Team America.
They are not religious art - although the virgin burka could be considered political art. The Bin Laden-Christ piece is just propaganda for the other side.
“Still, Christians shouldn’t try to kill or physically attack these supposed ‘artists.’ They should politely, but firmly, protest, as they seem to be doing already. “
I beg to differ. A good ass-wuppin has been society’s way of punishing people for outrageous and offensive behavior for millenia. Think of it as a societal immune system fighting America’s (and in this case, Aussie) germs.
Note that, just like in the Mapplethorpe controversy, the article your linked to does not show the offensive ones.
The virgin in the burka is the far worse political propaganda. A burqa is the symbol of submission to a dominant force. The Blessed Virgin Mary being shown in a burqa is nothing less than a declaration that the author intends to see Islam destroy Christianity.

I guess a lot of the Catholic church ladies I know should go out on a murderous rioting rampage. Actually, some of those church ladies can be pretty forceful. ;)
But seriously, where are the forces of “radical Christianity” that idiot ODonnell was talking about? If there really were such a thing there would have been riots and bloodshed already.
