Good to march to the left, but not always (FREE REPUBLIC MENTIONED DISPARAGINGLY)
Chicago Sun-Times ^ | August 30, 2007 | RICHARD 'DOPEY' ROEPER Sun-Times Columnist

Posted on 08/30/2007 5:57:17 AM PDT by Chi-townChief

So sometimes you have to put your right foot forward

Your turn. Michael Trujillo, LtCol, USMC (Retired): "I have always been a fan of yours, but I would like to take this opportunity to disagree with you. Understandably, you took exception to [Ted] Nugent's behavior. Now you know what the right feels when entertainers from the left spew the same kind of venom at President Bush. . . . When's the last time you wrote a column on the classless behavior from the left? Lord knows you've had ample opportunity." Sir: I understand where you're coming from. No doubt I've criticized conservatives more often than I've ripped liberals in my column -- but I HAVE written negative things about Sean Penn, Rosie O'Donnell, Hillary Clinton, Barbra Streisand and many other liberals when I thought it was warranted.

Call me an idealist, but I believe a columnist can be moderate/liberal but not take the company line on every single issue.

Lori Challinor: "With your take on Disney's 'High School Musical 2,' you have joined the ranks of many esteemed folk. . . . Your column was on the near-fascist blog 'Free Republic,' along with their amazingly juvenile 'Barf Alert' tag. The Free Republic is peopled by those who would feel more at home in Berlin, 1937, than in Philadelphia, 1776. You should take pride in knowing that you are hated by these folks. You must be doing something right."

It's an honor just to be nominated.

Anonymous: "You are a loony, left-wing, liberal goofball. Go to Russia, ass - - - -."

Why, is there a loony-left-wing-goofball convention taking place there?

Larry Cruz: "I always viewed you as more of a moderate than a liberal. To revisit the statement [at the end of the column]: 'As wholesome and family-friendly as those films are, both 'High School Musical' films promote tolerance, interracial dating and rejection of elitism, all liberal themes that drive those religious right-wingers nuts.' So . . . I'm Asian, right-wing, I'm quite religious, and I also believe in tolerance, interracial dating and rejecting elitism. Weird, huh? It's only a wild guess, but just maybe both liberals and conservatives believe in the same three values?"

Well said, Larry. I would hope you're right. But judging by the names I was called by many conservatives reacting to the column, I think some have to work on that whole "tolerant" thing.

James Scales: "My question to you is, what is the entertainment value in Ultimate Fighting? Would you rather see humans fight to the near-death than dogs?"

Excellent point. But at least the humans are CHOOSING to fight.

John Reents: "Your column was the first sign of sanity I saw in the local press regarding Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie in Chicago. You'd think we'd never seen a celebrity before, for Oprah's sake!"

Chicago has been home to the two biggest celebrities on the planet in the last quarter-century: Oprah and Michael Jordan. Overall, we're no more or less starstruck than the average New Yorker. Of course it was fun hosting Angelina and Brad, and some of the coverage was entertaining as hell. I just don't think the average Chicagoan cared THAT much.

Mikayla Nicholson: "I was watching your online video about walking out on movies and I agree with you 100 percent. I have walked out of a movie only once, when I was dragged to see 'The Hills Have Eyes 2.' I got queasy and threw up in the aisle and the exit. My dad said the same thing happened to him when he saw 'Psycho,' so I guess it runs in the family.

"Anyways, a couple random questions.

"1. Do you like eating during a movie?

"2. Where do you sit in the theater?

"3. (Which would make this more than a couple of questions, sorry.) Do you have a 'sick' movie? For me it's any chick flick. Ice cream, tissues, and 'Beaches' or 'Sleepless in Seattle' or 'Just Like Heaven,' a perfect Saturday night for me.

"4. Do you watch good TV as well? I remember seeing 'Garden State' for the first time and I loved it so I checked to see if 'Scrubs' was any good. I am now a die-hard fan. Funny how that happens.

"Anyhoo, if you've made it this far thanks for reading and I hope to God I see you at the movies. :)

"Peace, Love and Gap"

1. I see most movies between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., so it's more likely I'm injecting caffeine into my veins.

2. An aisle seat, or on the floor.

3. "Goodfellas," "True Romance," "Pulp Fiction," "The Maltese Falcon" and "The Professional."

4. I TiVo: "Friday Night Lights," "Heroes," "Lost," "The Office," "Entourage," "High Stakes Poker" and "Rescue Me." I don't always get around to actually watching all this stuff, but I try.

Peace Love and Gap to you as well.

Ya gotta love when a junior nazi like Ms. Challinor here, who probably fancies herself a real free thinker, gets it in a wad when someone doesn't agree with her point of view.

Moderate/liberal. Interesting use of the slash there...

A thing moderately good is not so good as it ought to be. Moderation in temper is always a virtue; but moderation in principle is always a vice.

Well, I don’t spend much time reading the Chicago Sun-Times. However, I can’t imagine why anyone would take what Mr. Roeper writes seriously.

The responses that he mentions are illustrative, though, as an indication of how bifurcated the nation has become.

As for myself, I would rather step to the right. We tried the left step, and it did not work.

That was supposed to be a column? I was lost reading the entire thing. I could have written better than that as a high school sophomore.

I guess Ms. Challinor doesn’t know much about fascism, Nazi Germany, or Free Republic.

They were socialists....national socialism. Socialists include: liberals, democrats, ba’athists, communists, etc.

They do not include gun totin’, backwoods, free-thinkin’, terbacky chewin’, deer huntin’, bass fishin’, pro-American, pro-military Freepers.

We are American rednecks and proud of it!

I’d appreciate it if she’d dealve into a subject just a bit before she started tossin’ inane charges around.

It's interesting that you would make than analogy, Lori, since it is your side that is so busily trying to take away every last vestige of free speech in this country with your P.C. ideology.

IMO, you have much more in common with Hitler's Germany than anyone here does, sweety.

Lori sounds like she’s for free speech as long as it’s what she wants to hear.

They have some pretty “intolerant” “hate speech” directed at Free Republic and its members.

Richard seems to have an unjustifiably high opinion of himself and his writing ability.

Narcissism describes the character trait of self love.
The word is derived from a Greek myth. Narcissus was a handsome Greek youth who rejected the desperate advances of the nymph Echo. As punishment, he was doomed to fall in love with his own reflection in a pool of water. Unable to consummate his love, Narcissus pined away and changed into the flower that bears his name, the narcissus.

I hate it when they call us names like this.
It only shows their own ignorance.

FREE REPUBLIC IS NOT A BLOG!

Your column was on the near-fascist blog 'Free Republic,' along with their amazingly juvenile 'Barf Alert' tag.>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

When Free Republic successfully battles the liberal socialist propaganda machine, using their own techniques, one can see how they detest their own medicine.

Their squeeling, direct attacks on FR in the news media and talk shows are merely a measure of our success.

McCain-Feingold tried to silence Free Republic, but what the Moonbats fail to do legislatively , thanks to the 1st amendment, they seek to do culturally.

We also have an inundation of trolls on FR , who seek to censor FReeper comments , as " That's what gives FR a bad name."

Comments which are innocuous about Barack Obama, for example , are called ,"Race baiting" by such trolls.

There will come a wonderfully humorous Troll Harvest in the near future, to which I am looking forward with eager anticipation.

I hope Challinor increases the volume on her whining , sputtering , iconoclastic, pronouncements. Every time I hear or read such statements, I know that the Conservative agenda is gaining immaculate ground for freedom and patriotism.

"The Free Republic is peopled by those who would feel more at home in Berlin, 1937, than in Philadelphia, 1776."

So tell me this Lori: Who regularly and consistently supports the military in its fight against terror - FreeRepublic or DU? And who regularly and consistently voices support for modern day Israel - FreeRepublic or DU?

As for being at home in 1937 Germany, my guess is that many FreeRepublic types were sent to the gas chamber. Back then they didn't have the internet and talk radio to counter the propaganda of the National Socialists. Whereas today, we have these tools to counter the propaganda of the present day National Socialists - AKA Democrats.
