Over the last 30 years my gas taxes have been reduced by two thirds.
You talk of a period of thirty years. I’m sure you realize how many more cars there are on the roads these days than when the current highway system was put in place.
Locally, with very few exceptions, our youngest freeway system was completed in the 70s. A number of them are sixties vintage. Some have been expanded and altered, but essentially, we’re dealing with 35 to 40 year old infrastructure, designed to accommodate the traffic of twenty years ago.
I’m only guessing, but we have at least double and perhaps triple the cars on the road today we did forty years ago. All those car owners are paying gas taxes. In some instances the new cars are getting better mileage, but the SUVs and trucks are not as efficient. The owners pay more by choice and I don’t fault them for it.
Who I fault, is our elected officials. They tax us to the max, misdirect funds at will, then come back at us from a different angle all the time to raise more funds that they can spend at will.
The waste is massive. The giveaways are massive. This has reached the level of malfeasance, and we need to call them on it. No more friggen back door ripoffs, period...
“Over the last 30 years my gas taxes have been reduced by two thirds.”
Well they usually cut bicycle riders some slack on their gas taxes.
