DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- Two men sealed the state's first legal same-sex marriage with a kiss Friday morning, less than 24 hours after a judge threw out Iowa's ban on gay marriage and about two hours before he put the ruling on hold.

Sean Fritz, left, and Tim McQuillan show their wedding license before getting married.

1 of 3 It was a narrow window of opportunity.

Thursday afternoon, Polk County Judge Robert Hanson temporarily cleared the way for same-sex couples across the state to apply for marriage licenses in Polk County.

He ruled that Iowa's 1998 Defense of Marriage Act, which allowed marriage only between a man and a woman, violated the constitutional rights of due process and equal protection of six gay couples who had sued.

County attorney John Sarcone promised a quick appeal, and he asked Hanson to stay his ruling until the appeal was resolved.

A dozen gay and lesbian couples were waiting at the county recorder's office when it opened Friday morning.

By late morning, 20 had applied for marriage licenses when Recorder Julie Haggerty announced that she had been instructed to stop accepting the applications. Hanson later said the judge that he had formally stayed his ruling.

One county judge tried to nullify several standing voter-approrved laws with this - this is probably one of the worst cases of judical overreach in history.

Annul the marriage based on irreconcilable similarities.

And what happened to Sodom and Gomorrah? I do believe we are truly a Christian nation because if we were this evil would not be happening.

I’m sure the “couple” had their reception at “Blazing Saddles”, Des Moines’ notorious gay bar.

Men having sex with men is like farting in church. Sure, it is physically possible, but it makes little old ladies cry and really pisses off God.

Correction if we were truly a Christian nation, living Christian lives this would not happen. How did this come to be?

So you're saying that two guys getting married in some other state is in part my fault because I'm not living a good enough Christian life? You're nuts. Speak for yourself in the future. I'm being the best Christian I can be, and I'll not take your blame for the choices other people make.

There is a 3 day waiting period in Iowa. How did it happen that these two perverts received an exception? Why did the so called judge make his ruling late thursday aftermppm and the ruling to be immediately?

This was a severe case of judiciary activism!!!

If this decision is reversed or vacated, then this “wedding” will be null and void. Just like what happened in New Paltz, NY and San Francisco, CA. The gay marriages in those localities were voided for lack of authority to grant them. The same will happen with this pseudo-marriage.

If this decision is reversed or vacated, then this “wedding” will be null and void.

From what I've read, that's not likely to occur as the Iowa State Supreme Court is packed with liberals who will probably sustain the county judges ruling. In that case, the legislature will be hard pressed to craft a state marriage amendment, a time-consuming task during which time hundreds of homosexual couples will probably get their "licenses", solidifying their political momentum. Any marriage amendment passed will, in my opinion, likely contain a concession clause; such as that no additional licenses be issued but that couples already "married" will be able to retain this status. Or, the granting of civil unions to such couples - which is marriage by another name. This has been the language of an attempted amendment to reverse such a judicial decision in the only other state to recognize homo-marriage (MA.)

We only have to thank the people in such states who say a marriage amendment isn't needed until judicial tyrants like this legislate against the people's will. I say put the safeguards in place like 27 other states and avoid the corruption of the institution. Who doesn't put locks on the doors of their homes until after it is burglarized once?

I think Red is saying that collectively, the Church has lost its moral authority in modern society - the "salt has lost its savor." This is true: divorce rates in the Church have reached epidemic levels and mirrors the rate among non-christians; in our lifestyles, we, collectively, are virtually indistinguishable from the world. The fact that many Christians can't see this is further proof of our spiritual impotence.
