Letter: Bad ideas galore from Huckabee
The Concord Monitor ^ | 9/19/2007 | Letter to the Concord Monitor

Posted on 09/19/2007 5:41:55 AM PDT by dano1

M ike Huckabee will be addressing seniors in the Concord area this month. Before you start to applaud, go to his website (mikehuckabee.com) and read what he plans to do to if he becomes president. It is not pretty.

I quote: "I am running to completely eliminate all federal income and payroll taxes. And do I mean all - personal federal, corporate federal, gift, estate, capital gains, alternative minimum, Social Security, Medicare, self-employment." Please Mr. Huckabee.

His "Fair Tax" alternative does not mention what will happen to Medicare and Social Security. In 15 paragraphs on "Taxes/Economy," only the words Social Security are mentioned, and never Medicare. No additional information as to what is to become of these two very important programs. Privatization Mr. Huckabee?

Next, immigration. He wants to build a fence along our border with Mexico, electronic in some places. Nice try.

And now I give you his health care plan: "The health care system in this country is irrevocably broken . . . We don't need universal health care mandated by federal edict or funded through ever-higher taxes." To conclude, be sure to read his stand on Second Amendment rights(opposed the Brady Bill) and marriage. He got Arkansas to become only the third state to adopt "covenant" marriage. Many churches in Arkansas will perform only covenant marriages. Whatever happened to the separation of church and state, Mr. Huckabee?

Welcome to New Hampshire, but please make your visit short and do not look for sustained applause from Granite Staters.

Mike Huckabee has a lot of bad ideas, but the ones listed weren’t them.

I’ve seen more bad ideas than good ones from most all of the candidates of both parites; I’ve seen more baloney posturing from obvious liars from both parties than I’ve ever seen before. In a word, it’s awful. The “Parties” aren’t working to produce quality candidates, plain and simple.

I agree. I like the FairTax and think Huckabee would make a good VP.

and think Huckabee would make a good VP.
Didn't we already have an Arkansas+Tennessee administration?
The thing about Huckabee, is he really brings nothing to the table electorally.
When a running mate is chosen from the ranks of the nominee's primary competitors, it is usually a very strong runner up, as was the case with Reagan choosing Bush, or Kerry choosing Edwards. Huckabee doesn't help strengthen a region where Republicans are historically weak, he wouldn't be helping to bring unity to a divided party, or ideological diversity in order to expand the ticket's appeal, he has no “gravitas” as it were, and he certainly wouldn't be the obvious choice to complete a "dream ticket."

For all of the above reasons look to Rudy Giuliani as the VP pick if Fred opts to choose from the 2008 GOP field.

Idiotic, on so many levels...

Separation of church and state" remains in Mr. Jefferson's personal letter to the Danbury Baptist Association where it has always been. (I need to check this, but I'm not sure that letter was ever ratified by the Congress or the State Legislatures.)

And the fact that Churches choose which marriages they perform or not is "separation of church and state"...

I’m no fan of Huckabee, but this writer listed his few good ideas. Of course, ideas that are good for America are usually bad for special interests, so don’t expect them to go anywhere.

"The health care system in this country is irrevocably broken"

He sounds like Michael Moore here.

I think we have one of the finest health care systems in the world.

Good points, but I wonder if either man would accept the VP position.

First of all, Mike Huckabee is not the “inventor” of the FAIR TAX. Many other people have studied the Fair Tax possibility, and it is one of the best solutions that is available today. For more information about the Fair Tax, visit this site here: http://www.fairtax.org/site/PageServer.

About immigration, Mike Huckabee wants a fence to be built between Mexico and the USA. Many people believe that this is one of the best ideas. Would you have a better suggestion? Would “not building a fence” be more effective to decrease illegal immigration?

Yes, a number of churches in Arkansas have decided to perform Covenant Marriages. However, under the Constitution, churches are free to practice whatever they may choose to. And as long as people can get married elsewhere, without using the Covenant Marriage procedure, why this issue should bother anyone?

Just this week, Mike Huckabee got 63% of support after the Presidential Debate organized by the Value Voters (see: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1898176/posts). This means that a large number of people think that what Mike Huckabee offers is better than what some other people propose.

I agree, it is very unlikely.
He will most likely pick someone who isn't currently running for president. It is very rare that a Presidential nominee chooses one of their competitors for the nomination.

However, in the unlikely event that Thompson does, it will be Rudy Giuliani, no one else.
