She appears to be openly courting the lesbian vote, while weakly denying the rumours about her own leanings. Even if she were to be exposed, I don't think she believes it would hurt her. She's already relying primarily on the votes of women, and if she is truly confused about her sexual identity, she may believe other women share the same antipathy toward men.

You are absolutely correct: Hillary phrases her response in such a way that it is (purposefully) unclear as to which question she is responding. She in fact does not answer the same question.

This is a classic technique. When asked a direct question, you answer with a "non-denial" denial, in which you broaden the original inquiry to include virtually anything ("People say a lot of things about me") and then offer that you can't control what other people say.

In this case, the questioner allows her an even better exit strategy by failing to ask the question directly; he only asks her to respond to "rumors" about the matter. Hillary can then deftly respond not to the original question but to her own embellishment upon it, and still manage to utter the words "it's not true". Of course, at this point, we can no longer be certain what "it" is.

Hillary learned very well from her husband.
