Latest Hollywood Perk: The Sober Buddy
Deadline Hollywood ^

Posted on 09/22/2007 5:12:51 PM PDT by socal_parrot

Hollywood is now indulging in a different kind of rehab substitute. It's intense and round the clock sober companionship, aka "The Sober Buddy". Rather than spending the standard 60 to 90 days in a clinic like Promises or Betty Ford, the actor or actress or exec hires a sober companion to keep on track. Twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, this coach by your side makes sure you stay clean. Such intense monitoring doesn't come cheap, as ABC News-- which claims Owen Wilson has a sober buddy -- found out from Douglas Caine, founder of Sober Champion with offices in LA, NYC and London. Caine says his prices range from $450 to $1,500 a day for care. as it happens, art is imitating life: Jim Carrey is supposedly still linked to a Universal project in development titled Sober Buddies to play a court appointed "sober buddy" to a hard-partying businessman needing an alcohol-free biz trip to Vegas. The glitch? The sober buddy falls off the wagon himself. Then again, Carrey's recent projects do have a habit of falling apart.

I’ve always wondered why these people don’t just hire someone to drive them around when they’re out getting screwed up.

When I was a teenager I spent my weekends driving an old drunk around on his bar hopping route. He paid for my meals and I had the use of his car while he sat and drank. He would tell me to come back at 4 oclock or something and off we’d go to his next bar stop.

$1500 per day? I see a career move for PaMom. I have two out of college; one who just started; and two more to go after that. Yep...sober buddy. Who better than a mom of five? Hmmmm....

Updating resume

Maybe this is not such a bad thing. It seems to me the family and friends of the rich and famous do not care enough about them to keep them on track I think hiring a personal nanny may be the sanest thing these people have ever done.

Same here. I don’t drink and I don’t have a problem being around it. Sounds like an ideal career choice.

I agree PAMom. As a mom, I think I’d be perfect for the job of being a professional nag. I do it now for free!!

Having raised three teens so far (two boys—both athletes...you know with teammates...) I have been there, done that, seen it, stopped it, etc. Sober buddy...for hire...I could do this.

If this is plus expenses, I want to apply. Seriously. I haven't touched a drop of alcohol since my college days and probably could not take up drinking at this point even if I wanted to do so.

I would like to make 90,000 dollars in 90 days being a thousand dollar a day sober buddy. Sure beats what I made working for the state on a substance abuse unit.

The hard part would be tolerating an obnoxious drunken liberal.

No...if you do it right...your buddy is never drunk. Then you (the sober one) raise your rates (because of your success rate) for the next client. Seriously...this could work. I nag and harass gratis now...as a professional I would excel!

My sober buddy quit on me after a week. Still looking for a sober buddy who “won’t quit me.”

I think that would be tolerating an obnoxious sober liberal. The obnoxious drunken liberal is my current employer, though I don't have to spend 24/7 with her.
