Here in Japan a considerably strong faction of ruling party conservatives in the Liberal Democrat Party see the lame duck status of Bush, and in addition to Condi's total caving on North Korea over the last year or so, are inclined to take the Israel approach and have been quite openly saying that Japan needs to go it alone in terms of relying on Uncle Sam, particuarly in the independent intel collection aspects toward North Korea. The perception of the Bush Administration reversing itself and becoming most unreliable in standing up to the threats, is also developing here in East Asia among some policy elites. The fact of whether this is happening or not is no longer a matter of debate.
