They never read what you write. They just have canned responses.
I didn’t even get a canned response from Harry Reid.

You are so spot on! I am always writing Senator Mary Landrieu. At the end of my e-mail I put please don’t respond to this e-mail because I don’t want to hear your Democratic rhetoric. I just wanted to voice my opinion.
Everytime, I write I get a letter in the mail with her canned responses - most of which I already knew. So, you’re right.

Agreed 99.999%.
The exception: I wrote to Senator Jesse Helms office on two occasions, both times the response from Senator Helms office left no doubt that someone had read and understood my note and replied very graciously, politely and specifically to my note, not a canned form letter.
I was very impressed, especially since I'm from Minnesota and Senator Helms office knew that from my note. My own Senators and Congressman use the canned letter that most nearly fits the issue.
Dear fieldmarshaldj,
Thanks for your thoughtful post on the FR thread entitled, Response from Congressman Mark Udall re: Rush. I am all for free speech that supports my position.
I look forward to your future posts.
