WASHINGTON -- Presidential candidate Chris Dodd dropped a fundraising pitch aimed straight at the heart of Red Sox Nation after Major League Baseball cried foul.
It seems the Dodd campaign erred when it offered contributors a chance to win seats for Game 6 of the American League Championship Series. All postseason tickets are apparently the property of Major League Baseball and the league does not allow such promotions.
The Dodd campaign sent e-mails Friday to people who ponied up $20.04 or more to score a seat at Fenway Park, explaining that the contest was over and they could seek a refund if they wanted.
"We have some bad news," the e-mail began. "Major League Baseball has asked the campaign to end our contest you entered to get a chance to go to a Red Sox game with Chris Dodd."
Colleen Flanagan, a spokeswoman for the campaign, said there was a "great response" to the promotion, but it was being discontinued at the request of Major League Baseball.
"We still are looking forward to cheering on the Red Sox," she said.
Dodd, who is unabashed in his support for the Red Sox, purchased the tickets from a friend and thought it would be fun to bring a campaign supporter to the game.
Here's how he put it on his campaign blog last week:
"There's something magical about playoff baseball under the shadow of the Green Monster, the Citgo sign in Kenmore Square, or the fact that if you squint hard enough you can almost make out Ted Williams patrolling the outfield or Carlton Fisk waving that ball inside the foul pole," he wrote.
"So let's go to Fenway Park ... I've got two extra seats -- great seats -- to Game Six of the American League Championship Series against the Cleveland Indians. And I believe they have your name on them."
Dodd had planned to pick one entrant at random next Thursday, who would get $600 toward air fare and a hotel room, as well as two tickets to the Oct. 20 game. If Game 6 wasn't needed, Dodd pledged tickets to a World Series game at Fenway.
And, on the chance that the Cleveland Indians dispatched the Red Sox early, the winner would get a day with Dodd on the campaign trail.
Dodd had required a minimum contribution of $20.04, in honor of the Red Sox World Series victory in 2004.
"I still have a chance to win the Presidency!"
*muffled laughter
“Rules don’t apply to me! Oink, oink!”
Democrats defile and degrade EVERYTHING they come in contact with.
This will probably give the idiots the idea that they should pass a retroactive law against Rush Limbaugh selling letters on ebay....
