Later this week, a South Texas World War II hero will be honored.

General David Lee "Tex" Hill died a few weeks ago at the age of 92 years.

On Friday, the National Museum of the Pacific War in Fredericksburg will honor the fighting ace with "Tex" Hill Day, which will feature speeches, music and friends' memories of Tex.

I posted this in the Texas forum, and will repost it here:

This would be a good chance for all of you who haven’t visited the National Museum of the Pacific War (yes, it’s in the middle of Texas, because that’s how we do things in Texas - why should it be in Hawaii or California?)

Make a donation or buy some gifts - the funding they receive from donations and purchases helps pay for the living historians or interpreters (guys who dress up like US Marines circa 1940s Pacific islands and who demonstrate WWII island assaults, complete with flamethrower) to put on demonstrations and talk to schoolchildren about World War II and the War in the Pacific (including visiting schools.

They will be putting on living history demonstrations in a few weeks as well:

Those guys who put on the hot-as-hell Marine gear and go out and put on these demonstrations for the public and schoolchildren are a great bunch of guys, and as far as I know, they are probably the only group in Texas doing what they are doing.

btw, I don't mean to detract from honoring Tex Hill, this is just a good chance to pay your respects to him, and at the same time, see what a great WWII asset we have in Central Texas.

Worth noting that the Museum of the Pacific War is in Fredericksburg because that’s Chester Nimitz’ hometown.

And a fine museum it is; I loved it, my wife loved it, and my then-9-year-old son loved it.

Absolutely!

From the Nimitz Museum website:

NOVEMBER 2 - TRIBUTE TO TEX HILL

Friday, November 2, at 1:30 p.m. in the Nimitz Museum Courtyard.

The National Museum of the Pacific War will honor David Lee "Tex" Hill, the famed World War II fighter ace who died October 11 at age 92.

The program will recall the heroics of Tex Hill, the retired Air National Guard brigadier general who helped lead a small volunteer force of fighter pilots called, "The Flying Tigers" in defending China against the Japanese.

"Tex Hill Day" at the museum will include speeches, music and recollections by friends of Tex Hill, as well as a fly-over of vintage aircraft and F-16s.

And if you happen to travel through Austin on your way to and fro, please stop in to visit with the folks at Camp Mabry's BG John C.L. Scribner Texas Military Forces Museum.

Nice video speaking to our mission at the museum: Best kept secret in Texas.

Texas, like all our States, has many heroes.

Hope to see as many of you as possible in Fredericksburg this Friday.

Why would the National Museum of the Pacific War be in Virginia?

All I saw at first was the headline mentioning Fredericksburg.

The only reason it’s in Fredericksburg Texas is because that’s where Chester Nimitz is from. They made a museum out of his grandfather’s hotel (Nimitz Museum) and added the Museum of the Pacific War to it on the same grounds.

Virginia is for lovers.

Anybody who has traveled on Skyline Drive (and was lucky enough to spend a night up there) knows what I mean.

Salute to "Tex" Hill!

After you got past your mistake . . . or my misdirection . . . what did you think . . . about "Tex" Hill?

I love the Nimitz museum.

They did a battle senerio with a BAR and a Flame Thrower and a bunch of other small arms and showed how they attacked a bunker in WWII.

I even think I saw a Thompson SMG.

Very exciting.

My newspaper reporter daughter interviewed Tex a few years ago.

He was very down to earth and a class act.

She loved the guy.

The “Tex” should have told me something, but then I’m not always that bright. Quite a fighter pilot he was!!

Sorry Liberty. Tex Hill has always been one of my heroes, but I’m starting a new job Friday. This is a major bummer. It’s really a shame with Fred’burg just right down the road.
