Wasilla women indicted on Halloween theft charges
HALLOWEEN CRIME: Eight children who were robbed testify.
By ANDREW WELLNER
PALMER -- Eight children whose candy was taken from them at gunpoint by two women on Halloween in Talkeetna, according to Alaska State Troopers, testified Thursday before a grand jury.
Two women -- Kendra Grace Butts, 18, and Amber Marie Martin, 20, both of Wasilla -- were indicted Friday on seven counts of robbery, one of attempted robbery and eight of assault. If convicted, they face a maximum of 180 years each in prison. The minimum sentence for robbery with a gun in Alaska is seven years.
The District Attorney's office added the attempted robbery charge Friday after learning from Alaska State Troopers that one child in the incident refused to surrender the candy. Troopers originally reported seven children were robbed that night on Main Street but Friday said they learned an eighth child hid behind a tree during the incident.
Recordings of phone calls to Butts and Martin from their boyfriends in jail detailed for troopers the two women's involvement in the Halloween stickup, according to an affidavit filed in the case against Butts.
Troopers on Oct. 31 arrested the boyfriends, Michael Scott Wilson and Aaron J. Tolen, both 24, of Wasilla, in a Talkeetna restaurant not long after the robbery. The two were indicted Friday on one count each of hindering prosecution and weapons misconduct.
A troopers spokeswoman, Beth Ipsen, said the troopers' robbery investigation led them Nov. 5 to a cache of stolen goods worth more than $100,000 near Montana Creek Road about two miles from the Parks Highway. The recovered goods are linked to a string of burglaries in the Upper Susitna Valley area. Nobody has been charged in connection with the stolen property or the burglaries.

Lock 'em up and throw away the key...
Dear God forgive me but that is funny!
The last name of one of the “perps” isn’t helping!
Wonderful, these two mental midgets are going to cost the taxpayer’s of alaska 10yrs (each) x 25,000 or so.
Not only are criminals stupid, they are expensively stupid.

I am concerned about crime. i would be far more concerned if most criminals weren’t so incredibly stupid.
My dad has worked in corrections for about 4 decades. He used to carry a beeper — as in, it beeps and you call the office. This was before LCD displays and cell phones. He’d go to a pay phone and call in.
I only heard his side of the conversation, which generally went something like: “Who? Yeah, Uh-huh. Call the locals and send a car to the wife’s house, the girlfriend’s house and the mother’s house. Shake down the cellmate. Call me when you hear something.”
They usually got caught within a few hours.
Good grief! Taking candy from babies. With a gun!
What a bunch of morons....Getting nailed for stealing candy led to the really big loot...
I can’t help laughing ..But this is serious. Is there nothing else these women had to do on Halloween? Stealing/robbing candy from children. I would put them in jail & NEVER let them candy the whole time they were there.
Since the primary criminal aspect of robbery is the extortion, rather than the actual receipt of stolen property, I'm not sure I completely buy the attempted vs. actual aspect here.
Not a joke. This asshats fird the guns as they drove off. It could have a lot nastier as Alaska allows CCW without a permit. Troopers were out in force for this one.
Count on this netting some hard time.
Yup they need to be under the jail.
But I’d lay even money that one or both of the perps has “emotional issues” and may have been diagnosed with something or other by a shrink.
So when they go to jury with this some idiot in the 12 will take pity on the “poor misguided girls pointing guns at the kids” and argue that “jail isn’t the help these girls need”.
At least if my last experience on a jury is any clue.
There was that girl recently who was crying over global warming & her land & tribe etc. I forget all of it but maybe thats what got into these 2 criminals. They were upset by global warming & needed a candy fix really bad...s/
IMHO they need to go to jail along with their boyfriends. If they fired shots as they were leaving , then give them a longer sentence.
Photo of Miss Butts.
Kendra Butts, 18, attempts to hide her face from news media Nov. 8, 2007, while being arraigned in Palmer Superior Court. Butts, accused of robbing several trick-or-treaters in Talkeetna of their Halloween candy, is charged with six counts of robbery and seven counts of assault. Also facing the same charges in the case is Amber Martin, 20. Both women are being held at the Mat-Su Pre-Trial Facility, Butts in lieu of $75,000 bail and Martin in lieu of $50,000 bail.
Con: What are you in for?
Butts: We stole some rocks in a heist.
Con: Rocks, eh? Diamonds?
Butts: Nah, nothing like that.
Con: Oh, Rocks ! You mean you ripped off a crack dealer, right?
Butts: Nah, nothing like that.
Con:Well, what kind of rocks we talking about then?
Butts: Pop Rocks, we stole Halloween candy from some kids.
No kidding!
I am continually amazed by the sub-culture of the Valley (Mat-Su). For the most part this area is inhabited by conservatives who make do for themselves. However there is a violent and dangerous underclass here that surfaces from time to time. These perps were likely meth users or cookers as the Valley has been dubbed the Meth capitol for the state. One look at their teeth would confirm that. Why they were up in Talkeetna is suspicious, it is about 90 minutes from Wasilla at the terminal end of a highway. Talkeetna is reputed to be a good place to deal in pharmaceuticals.
I would put them in jail & NEVER let them candy the whole time they were there.
Every day have the kids eat candy outside their cell, just out of reach. The really good candy.
Let them have one or two pieces of the really sucky candy once in awhile. The stuff that sells for $1.99 for a five pound bag.
