11/09/2007 Kerry Spokesman Sets Limbaugh Straight on Swiftboat Smears

WASHINGTON D.C. – Kerry spokesman David Wade issued the following statement today in response to Rush Limbaugh, who said on his radio show that Kerry’s Swift Boat attackers in 2004, “were right on the money and nobody has disproven anything they claimed in any of their ads, statements, written commentaries, or anything of the sort.”

“At first I thought, that’s not Rush, that’s just the OxyContin talking. Nonetheless, this is a despicable but unsurprising new lie from a man whose closest brush with combat came when customs officials tried to take away his Viagra. This portly peddler of hate is once again wrong on the facts. John Kerry served his country with honor in Vietnam, and has fought for his fellow veterans ever since. The lies and smears of the Swift Boat Veterans for Bush were disproved conclusively in 2004 by the men who fought by John Kerry’s side in Vietnam, by the military’s own records, by investigative journalists, and by the incredible contradictions that exposed these right wing smear artists. It is long past time that we end the politics of fear and smear that we have seen used against decorated veterans from John McCain to Max Cleland and John Kerry. Rush Limbaugh’s ignorance and determination to divide Americans is just another reminder that you can’t spell ‘Rush Limbaugh’ without the letters L-I-A-R.”

The watchdog group Media Matters has provided an excellent fact check of the Limbaugh smear, proving once again that when it comes to slandering veterans, the right wing is wrong. The fact check can be found at: (http://mediamatters.org/items/200711090008?f=h_latest)

Love the equivalence implied here.

Though I disagree with the politics of both Cleland and McCain, you can't dispute that one left three limbs and the other left five years of his life in Vietnam.

What'd Kerry leave there, other than maybe a stink?

Kerry Says He’s Finally Ready to Refute Swift Boat Veterans [semi-satire]

Senator John Kerry (D-Mass.) whose bid for the presidency in 2004 was damaged by attacks on his vaunted Vietnam War record by a group called “Swift Boat Veterans for Truth,” says he is now ready to refute their allegations.

“We have put together a powerful and irrefutable rebuttal to the scurrilous charges made against me by these right wing fanatics,” Kerry asserted.

Kerry declined to disclose any of his reputedly irrefutable proof at this time saying that “the American people have not yet shown a sufficient measure of regret and contrition for voting against me. They disrespected me—a decorated veteran—and reelected a draft-dodging doofus. Until I get an apology, I’m holding my fire.”

Kerry said he expects that America’s eagerness to finally hear the full story “will build to an unbearable level. Then they’ll apologize just so they can satisfy their curiosity. They won’t be disappointed.” The senator
did offer a teaser when he hinted that he has evidence indicating that the war would have ended differently had he not been forced out of action by his wounds.

I guess Mr. Wade hasn’t heard that Media Matters has their own credibility problem.

JF'nK was in Vietnam. He was in action, if not exactly combat. That simple set of facts alone would have stood him in good stead with the majority of Americans. He was there. However, while he was there he lied, connived, and cheated his way around the system.

I believe he would like us to focus on what he did while in VietNam, no matter how sleazy and dishonest it was, precisely because it is murky, and now very hard to document, especially with him hiding the documents. Our stress should be on what he did afterwards, which is what he would really like to hide.

Also, the question of his discharge, which would settle this once and for all, is never going to be answered. The question for us is, "Can we get him out of the race for the Senate in 08, or failing that, beat him in a fair fight at the polls?"

Jean Francois was in Vietnam? WHO KNEW???

Had he just mentioned it, more people may have voted for him. His modesty blew the election for him!?!

Oh, how we yearn for the time of Kennedy's Camelot when Democrats spoke in poetry, LOL.

So what were the particular allegations that they “disproved”?

they aren't going to tell us unless everyone apologizes for voting against Kerry.

The story about John Kerry going into Cambodia for the CIA wasn't a story that Kerry just told over beers.

He wrote a detailed story about the adventure and it was published in the Boston Herald under the byline, "By John Kerry."

Vietnam then was worlds apart from 'Apocalypse Now'

He does have a point. Can Rush claim to have pulled enemy rice from his butt like John Kerry can? I think not.

reminds me of this:

P.J. O’Roarke suggests:

JOHN KERRY EFFECTIVELY ENDED HIS political career on February 28, 2005, during a little-noticed event at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library in Boston.

How’d he do that?

Addressing the audience of tame Democrats, Kerry explained his defeat. “There has been,” he said, “a profound and negative change in the relationship of America’s media with the American people. . . . If 77 percent of the people who voted for George Bush on Election Day believed weapons of mass destruction had been found in Iraq—as they did—and 77 percent of the people who voted for him believed that Saddam Hussein was responsible for 9/11—as they did—then something has happened in the way in which we are talking to each other and who is arbitrating the truth in American politics. . . . When fear is dominating the discussion and when there are false choices presented and there is no arbitrator, we have a problem.”

America is not doctrinaire. It’s hard for an American politician to come up with an ideological position that is permanently unforgivable. Henry Wallace never quite managed, or George Wallace either. But Kerry’s done it. American free speech needs to be submitted to arbitration because Americans aren’t smart enough to have a First Amendment, and you can tell this is so, because Americans weren’t smart enough to vote for John Kerry.

(NOTE FOR FOLKS OVERSEAS AND MOST GRADUATES OF THE AMERICAN PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM: The First Amendment protects freedom of the press and freedom of speech, among other things.)

“We learned,” Kerry continued, “that the mainstream media, over the course of the last year, did a pretty good job of discerning. But there’s a subculture and a sub-media that talks and keeps things going for entertainment purposes rather than for the flow of information. And that has a profound impact and undermines what we call the mainstream media of the country. And so the decision-making ability of the American electorate has been profoundly impacted as a consequence of that. The question is, what are we going to do about it?”

Kennedy was doped up while in office too. He met with the Ruskies stoned on pain killers. He smoked pot and reportedly took LSD.

Well, he could sure put a lot of this to rest by signing the 180 and letting someone other than the Boston Globe see what's in his file. The fact he won't sure speaks volumes - he's hiding something.

My own experience, in a peacetime Army, was that I made quite a bond with my fellow junior officers. I'd never go public with any dirt on them, even if one were a liberal running for President. The fact that around 100 vets, including virtually all his fellow junior officers and chain of command, were willing to go public that Effing was lying and/or dishonest about his service is unprecedented and tells me there was something very, very wrong with how young Lt. Kerry conducted himself. They never would have taken this extraordinary step, otherwise.

Reading through David Wade’s long string of personal attacks, I didn’t see him mention any specific thing that Swift Boat Vets got wrong.

If the truth was on David Wade’s side he won’t have to do so much hand waving.
