November 14, 2007 Anti-Bush Sign Has Bridge World in an Uproar By STEPHANIE STROM
In the genteel world of bridge, disputes are usually handled quietly and rarely involve issues of national policy. But in a fight reminiscent of the brouhaha over an anti-Bush statement by Natalie Maines of the Dixie Chicks in 2003, a team of women who represented the United States at the world bridge championships in Shanghai last month is facing sanctions, including a yearlong ban from competition, for a spur-of-the-moment protest.
At issue is a crudely lettered sign, scribbled on the back of a menu, that was held up at an awards dinner and read, We did not vote for Bush.
By e-mail, angry bridge players have accused the women of treason and sedition.
This isnt a free-speech issue, said Jan Martel, president of the United States Bridge Federation, the nonprofit group that selects teams for international tournaments. There isnt any question that private organizations can control the speech of people who represent them.
Not so, said Danny Kleinman, a professional bridge player, teacher and columnist. If the U.S.B.F. wants to impose conditions of membership that involve curtailment of free speech, then it cannot claim to represent our country in international competition, he said by e-mail.
Ms. Martel said the action by the team, which had won the Venice Cup, the womens title, at the Shanghai event, could cost the federation corporate sponsors.
The players have been stunned by the reaction to what they saw as a spontaneous gesture, a moment of levity, said Gail Greenberg, the teams nonplaying captain and winner of 11 world championships.

Nobody laughed, Beeyatch. Get a clue.
Not a particularly attractive bunch, I must say. About what one would expect from a liberal crowd.
Just like sudden jihad syndrome, Bush Derangement Syndrome seems to break out everywhere... hey, wait a minute.... ;-)
If they want to say it to the interviewers after the award ceremony, fine. I’ll still think they are [borderline treasonous] idiots, but as Americans they do have the right to embarrass themselves in public.
But hijacking the organization’s event? That is beyond merely rude.
I also think badmouthing your country elsewhere is as appropriate as publishing you bedroom activities in the local paper.
*snort of disgust*

(A search on “bridge” would have found it.)
Boo-freakin'-hoo. Maybe you'll learn a lesson the Dixie Chicks never did. No one cares what Hollyweirdos, singers, or bridge players have to say about politics. Stick to your career (who knew bridge was a career), keep your mouth shut and DO NOT bad mouth the US in foreign countries.
More liberal Jewish American Princesses. I think Irina used to be in Monty Python.
I searched on the title.....no hits
Danny read that law somewhere. He wrote it down, and then he read it.
New book title: SHUT UP and Bid!
Stupid woman. This kind of American bashing appeasement will not save her if the enemy prevails.
Irina is free to return to Russia and live under Pooty-Poot.
Yet another type of Derangement syndrome.
THe tall one looks like her luggage must have gotten lost and she was forced to show up in her slip.
What a motley crew.
I never knew Jews were so much into Bridge.
I thought it was the province of folks named Buffy and Tooty.
Bridge isn’t exactly known to attract supermodels. Not all female bridge players look like this, but bridge tournaments aren’t the first place I’d go to look for a babe — liberal or conservative.
