I agree with you 100%. My worry would be all of our people that are on very poorly protected compounds in range of their conventional weapons. This is especially true if Iran strikes first. If they do that, it will take us at least a week to get air superiority back.

I don’t know what Iran can do to hit first. They don’t have an Air Force that would last 10 minutes against the US. Their Navy is limited to speed boats that would last 10 minutes against the US Navy. The Long Range rockets are lucky if they can hit with-in a mile or two of where they are aimed, and our anti-missile missiles are becoming better all the time to take these out. The only thing they have that might be dangerous is the anti-ship missiles, and I think the US Navy can deal with those. If they try a massed land attack into Iraq or Afghanistan, they will be looking fondly back on Saddam and the Iran-Iraq war, as the slaughter will be horrendous. The US forces and the ground forces in particular, are the most experienced, veteran, hardened military forces on earth and with air superiority, would annihilate 100 times their number of Iranian canon fodder. Attacking US forces, when said forces are in defensive positions, is suicide.
