The 911 call came from a Pasadena, Tex., resident, who alerted police to two burglary suspects on a neighbor's property. Before he hung up, two men were dead by his hand.
Joe Horn, 61, told the dispatcher what he intended to do: Walk out his front door with a shotgun.
"I've got a shotgun," Horn said, according to a tape of the 911 call. "Do you want me to stop them?"
"Nope, don't do that - ain't no property worth shooting somebody over, OK?" the dispatcher responded.
"Hurry up man, catch these guys, will you? 'Cause I'm ain't gonna let 'em go, I'm gonna be honest with you, I'm not gonna let 'em go. I'm not gonna let 'em get away with this ----."
Shortly after, Horn said he sees one suspect was standing in front of his house, looking at it from the street.
"I dont know if theyre armed or not. I know they got a crowbar 'cause that's what they broke the windows with. ... Man, this is scary, I can't believe this is happening in this neighborhood."

Gee... CBS finally got wind of the story?
What a loser news outfit
Little paranoid of the posting police... Hope you don’t have a handy shotgun..
I love Texas so much, I’m moving back next February. Shoot first, ask questions later but make sure they fall inside the house door. This is actually a sad story for the neighbor that shot the crooks, he will go to jail for murder.
I heard the tape and he clearly states, "I'm gonna kill 'em" right before putting the phone down and going over to the neighbor's house to shoot the perps.
Not exactly a case of self defense or having one's life in imminent danger.
Texas law clearly allows deadly force to protect other's property (Penal Code 9.43)
He'll be Nifong'd and bankrupted, but will ultimately be acquitted.
Probably won’t go anywhere in a Texas court of law.
The bystander was in clear violation of Texas law at the time (since nobody was in imminent danger as the suspect fled in his car), but was never charged. When asked why not, the local prosecutor said something along these lines: "I wouldn't be able to find a grand jury to indict him in a million years."
I bet this guy is going to get off without so much as a mildly harsh line of questioning from the police.
The guy who shot and killed them called 911 as did the neighbor across the street who corroborated that one of the suspects charged at him. He will be exonerated and it will not even go to trial.
Any DA in Texas who charges him will not be DA for long. Watch for Feds to make civil rights case.,
bump!
If only this was not an uncommon response to crime.
Indiana's rural citizens views of justice are coming under attack from the urban liberals as those liberals flee the cities for "a place in the country".
I have no doubt the guy was scared s#!+less when he went out, he said the burglars were in his yard and the story says that they were within 15' of him. He has a right to protect himself and his property, he doesn't have to cower in his hole like a scared bunny.
If arrested and released on bail I'm sure the perps would walk the straight and narrow and let our justice system do it's job. I'm sure they wouldn't think of eliminating the only witness, doubt it would even cross their mind.
Dispatcher: How many suspects do you see?
Caller: Two. There’s two guys over there. Wait, hold on...
BLAM! BLAM!
Caller: Uh, just one suspect, probably...or else none.
“The identities of the men killed were released Friday.
They are Miguel Antonio Dejesus, 38, and Diego Ortiz, 30. Official records show that each of them had a prior arrest in Harris County for drug offenses.”
The immediate question springs to mind...legal? or illegal? Druggies, stealing to keep up their habits. Predators.
Good riddance to the slimbags, and thank you, Mr. Horn. A true American Hero.
His neighbor will confirm that the neighbor has an understanding that they look out for each other’s property.
Nothing wrong with that! And it is legal. He was responsible for protecting the neighbor’s property.
Like I said before:
If only we had protected our neighborhood.
If only we had protected our downtown areas.
If only we had protected our parks.
If only we had protected our (fill in the blank).
If there were more people like this concerned neighor, things could possibly be different now.
The thieves took the risk and lost. Nothing to see here.
They had a somewhat similar case in Texas a few years back in which a bystander shot and killed a guy fleeing a murder scene outside a shopping mall (the guy had stalked and killed his ex-girlfriend who worked there)...
Sounds like you are referring to the Irving Mall. This is where a guy shot his girlfriend in the mall and then killed her outside the mall and got in his car to get away.
A bystander in his truck had a .44 magnum with scope. He said he was on the way to the range. Which is what you had to say back then to have a gun in your car.
It was interesting when the police got there, since the guy shot the perp through his door where and the guy drove the car outside the mall and into the ditch.
The bystander left the scene so for a while the police thought the guy killed himself as there was no other evidence around.
Then they figured out someone shot him. The guy was a Xerox repair man. So someone said they needed to make another copy of this guy to get rid of some more scum.
He got off, I can’t remember but think a grand jury let him go. There was no life threatened as the girl was already dead so they were not sure whether to prosecute.
