For Kerry, the public showdown with Pickens represents not only a belated engagement with old antagonists, but also an early strike against a Democratic primary opponent who signaled Monday that he welcomes the scrutiny of Kerry's military record initiated by the Swift Boat ad campaign in 2004.
"It goes to his credibility," said Ed O'Reilly, a Gloucester lawyer mounting a challenge to Kerry in the Democratic primary. "It needs to be cleared up."
[snip]
As it stands, the man most welcoming of the return to the conflicts of 2004 is O'Reilly, who is attacking Kerry as not opposing the Iraq war strongly enough and says that the issues raised by the Swift Boat ads reflect on Kerry's character.

He would have if the polls said it was a better position to take at the time.
Say what??? When did this happen? I don't THINK so!
I think I read Kerry released limited records to ONLY two reporters who happened to be personal friends and called that DISCLOSURE.
He signed it for release to this particular paper (The Boston Globe) who perused it and made the statement that 'it looks okay to us'......!
I had a specific memory of reading about two reporters.
Could have been two friends of his from The Boston Globe.
Why not a universal release, why only that paper and not to the public?
Why are people supposed to take the Boston Globe’s word of what his record looks like?
Especially since we are talking about the democrat primary in Massachusetts.
This is vindication, if any were needed.
We both know the answer to that... If all his records are on the up-and-up, why in God's name wouldn't he release them when he was running for the Presidency..?
Right, and his unwillingness to expose his records openly might do us the huge favor of unseating the buzzard.
Read letter from Pickens to Kerry -- clearly asks Kerry to sign for the Form 180 by asking for military records between 1971-1976 (1978).
Clearly not Pickens fault that Kerry jumped the gun by going national on what he (Kerry) thought Pickens was asking him for.
Stinking traitor:
“They told stories that at times they had personally raped, cut off ears, cut off heads, taped wires from portable telephones to human genitals and turned up the power, cut off limbs, blown up bodies, randomly shot at civilians, razed villages in fashion reminiscent of Ghengis Khan, shot cattle and dogs for fun, poisoned food stocks, and generally ravaged the countryside of South Vietnam in addition to the normal ravage of war and the normal and very particular ravaging which is done by the applied bombing power of this country.”
He released his records to one man who gave his “opinion” as to what is in them.
Apparently his guilt wont let that happen...it seems to have become his own personal hell.
Yet it doesn't say the record disputes the Swift Boat claims either.
Very ironic and amusing that it’s someone moonbattier than even Kerry who is using this against him.
Who cares, nearly everyone knows Kerry lied about his service, just as he lied to Congress when he returned from his “combat tours”. Kerry doesn’t have a chance of being elected President and is no longer in the inner circle of Congress. It would be great to remove him from the Senate but IMO thats gonna happen anyway. This is a desperate attempt by Kerry to get back in the news.
Kerry will never release his complete record to the public. It would be the end for him. Odds are that Kerry has an Other than Honorable discharge that was upgraded when Carter granted amnesty to deserters and upgraded thier discharges.
This becomes increasingly harder now that the BoSox are regular World Series Champions (and what about them Pats?!?!). Kerry has made a professional career of loser politics in a state that is starting to enjoy victory regularly.
How could Kerry turn himself around? He could quit politics, have good clean fun (drive fast cars, go wind surfing, play the guitar, snow boarding, etc.), and he can give to charity WHILE KEEPING HIS MOUTH SHUT CONCERNING ALL POLITICAL RHETORIC except to say positive things like, “I love America.” It’s unfortunate for a man who’s burned his chance at being taken seriously. Perhaps his best advice to others will be his saying, “Don’t be like me! Don’t make my mistakes!” If he could even say this, he’ll have greatly improved his standing among men.
That’s right. He still has a chance at being a real hero and learning the lessons of what happens to sore losers (like ex-Pres. Jimmy whatzhisname) when they can’t get over it.
