Many crash into environmentally friendly design with soaring glass windows
It is one of Emory University's most environmentally friendly buildings, a hallmark of the institution's efforts to "go green." To hear John Wegner describe it, it's also a slaughterhouse.
The soaring glass windows in Emory's Mathematics and Science Center reflect the woodsy view, confusing hapless birds who smash into it at full speed.

But, what, pray tell, is an "environmentally friendly building"???? And how can they be called that? I always thought that birds were a part of the environment, and these buildings don't appear to be very friendly to them.
A sod house?
Once again, the law of unintended consequences....
I am never sure where these experts come up with these astronomical numbers. A billion birds is a lot of birds. I have seen hundreds of birds crash into glass. Some so hard I was surprised the window wasn’t broken. I have never seen a bird killed. I have only ever seen 4 or 5 even hit the ground, the rest just fly into a tree and think things over.
I just question the numbers here. I am all for birds flying free and avoiding crashes. Maybe the AJC can push for little bird helmets and just bypass the architects completely.
Add rubber boots to prevent “wire expire”.
l0l......Of course, why didn’t I think of that? Sometimes I can be so cold and inconsiderate. :)
We called the hospital...like grownups do...to find out how she was. They said she "expired". We thought she was better and had gone home. We were happy until mom explained the word "expired".
Heh, Bless your hearts. The world could certainly use more children like that today.
Going green always seems to bring about some disaster.
I could have told them that and saved them a lot of money.
I guess they just lost their LEED certification, now that they have those drapes which defeat the purpose of the big glass windows.
Hey, if they can do a "V" formation, they can learn the letter "U".
And please...go one step further...and develop a shield for my car...so they don't do their "bombs away" on my car right after i wash it.
Just cut down the trees that are being reflected in the glass. And how soaring could the building be, we dont have Redwoods in Georgia to match some skyscraper.
I worked in a building that had this problem. Eventually, they put some fake owls around to scare the birds off.
I am getting sick of this and the stupidity of some of it. I've heard of places putting up a canoe dock and getting credits. The hippies are taking over.
Whatever the drug-addled "greenies" say it is.
In my own words, any design that relegates human beings and their needs as the lowest priority is "environmentally friendly".
Haven't you noticed?
The only thing that kills more birds on my place is our cat. I would say at least one bird a week crashes into one of our windows and about half don't survive it.
When we hear the distinctive sound my wife rushes out with a collander to rescue the bird from the cat.She places the bird on the deck under the collander. An hour later we either find it chirping or pinin' for the fiords.
Various windows probably have different potentials for harming birds. Worst is a situation like ours where the bird can see daylight by seeing through the southside windows from the northside. They just don't get enough hint that there is a problem so they don't diminish their flight speed.
Great picture. I still can’t believe the parents ever had sex.
