I was once at the Post Office, and they charged me a bit than I expected for something. So I shrugged, and grinned, and said: "Can't fight the government. Here's your money."

The clerk went ballistic on me and read me the riot act, because the US Post Office is not part of the government. It is a private business, self-supporting, with no government funding at all!

And I'm thinking "One of us is a complete moron."

Postal service story...

A good friend of mine is an author of books he has published, shipped to him and then he ships them to his customers. Currently has over 12 books in print, and supplies of 10 of them in his garage.

He has a real day job so often he will package up the orders at night and his wife will take them to the post office the next morning.

One day she walked in with 35 orders totaling over 100 books and the guy at the counter told her she couldn't mail that much stuff. So she turned around and went home.

3 days later on a Saturday morning my friend walked in (with his wife) with 4 days orders, totalling over 700 books and waited specifically for the same guy. He left a good 10 people behind him go through when a window opened just to deal with that guy.

When he became available, my friend walked up and the guy gave him the same story. So my friend insisted that he pull out the regulations manual and show him where it states he can not mail this much stuff at a time. When he couldn't do it he asked for the Post Master of the office to come over and show him.

The Post Master immediately told him there was no such limit and he would be happy to help him.

Infact, the PM told my friend that in the future he should just drive around to the back and his guys at the loading docs would help take the packages right from his truck for him and he wouldn't have to do anything.

He smiles and waves at the guy who tried to refuse him service every time he goes in.
